A word from our District Chairperson:
In order to begin strengthening our district we need to understand what it is to be successful. What exactly is a “successful” scout unit? How does each unit know at the end of the year when all things are said and done if they were successful that year?
This is where the Journey to Excellence award comes in. In previous years, this award has been known as the Quality Unit award. The Journey to Excellence is a much improved version of the Quality Unit standards. A unit can earn the Journey to Excellence award by achieving the goals outlined in the award. The award is not just a recognition tool, the purpose of the award is to:
1. Determine the health of each unit.
2. Encourage continuous improvement of their program.
This is a great starting point for the Adobe Walls district to help improve our units and educate our leaders on why they should strive for the Journey to Excellence award.

Merry Christmas to all! It’s the holiday time and a busy one at that. Popcorn is finally done and we did a great job. Sales were up 8% from last year. Thank you to everyone that helped with distribution. Now that I know what to expect, next year will run a little smoother. If anyone has any suggestions with regards to popcorn, commissions, or anything that we can do to make popcorn more successful, please email me and I will forward the ideas to the council.
I will be out of town most of December for training and the holidays. I will still be available via cell, text, and email so please contact me if there are any issues I need to attend to.
I need to get a schedule of all upcoming Courts of Honor and Blue & Gold Banquets scheduled. Please get with your unit committee and leaders and get on the schedule and email me the dates and times. I look forward to attending and honoring the boys in your units.
I am really trying to build the unity back up within the Adobe Walls. I want to plan DISTRICT events that we can all get together as Adobe Walls units and have fun while building unity. Let me know if you have any ideas.
Finally, I want to wish everyone a safe and wonderful Christmas season. This is a beautiful time of year and I hope everyone has a great time with family and friends. If you travel, be safe. I’m looking forward to an exciting new year in 2012. God Bless you!

Roundtable Leader meetings
The December Roundtable (Adult Leader) meetings will be held at the times and locations listed in the above calendar. These meetings are an excellent time to turn in your Unit’s recharter, or receive last minute help in getting the recharters completed. Let’s get those recharters completed before the Christmas Holiday festivities swing into high gear!
Popcorn Sale Money Due
Your unit’s popcorn sale money is due in Amarillo, at the Council Office, on or before Friday, December 2, 2011. The last 2% popcorn sales incentive depends on your unit making this deadline. Steve will be going to Amarillo, early on the morning of Friday the 2nd, so if you get your check & a copy of your invoice to him, he’d be glad to take it toAmarillo, to save you having to mail it. This will also insure your payment will make it in by the deadline.
Unit Recharters
Unit recharter time is almost upon us. All of our unit charters expire on December 31, 2011. We need to have the rechartering process completed by December 1, 2011. This allows our Council staff adequate time to correct any errors, or help you with online procedural questions. We are utilizing online rechartering again this year. This is our seventh year to do a portion of the recharter via the Internet.
What does your unit need to be doing to get ready?
- Complete any applications for any new Scouts, or leaders, and submit them, along with the required registration and Boy’s Life fees, to the Council Office, now. This will save you from having to manually enter new members and leaders during online rechartering.
- All applications for membership need to be complete: all birthdays, Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers filled in, all signature blocks signed (this includes unit Committee Chair and Chartered Organization Head or Representative’s approval signatures for all adults, and Authorization for Background Check) and application dates.
- Recruit/designate one adult leader from your unit to complete the online recharter portion of the process.
- Remember, rechartering is not complete until all paperwork and fees have been received by the Council Office!
Please remember that the National Council registration fee is $15. Don’t forget to add the $1 mandatory insurance fee for each paid adult and youth. Recharter packets for your Unit will be distributed during the month of November.
District Award of Merit
Congratulations to Jim Lear, Eagle Scout and longtime Scouting volunteer, fromPerryton,Texas! He is our 2011 District Award of Merit honoree. Jim was nominated, by his fellow volunteer Scouters, for his years of service to youth. The District Award of Merit is the highest honor that a District can bestow upon a volunteer Scouter.

Most of you should have heard by now that I have accepted a promotion with the East Texas Area Council, located inTyler,TX. I will begin my new duties on January 3, 2012, as a District Director.
It has been my pleasure to serve the youth and Scouting volunteers of the Lone Wolf District, for the last 6-1/2 years! I will miss being involved in Scouting with you all!
An active search is already underway for my replacement. Please welcome my replacement and show him/her the same kindness and devotion to Scouting, which you have shown me. This District is blessed with outstanding Scouters, who believe in the future of our kids and how Scouting is the premier way to insure our kids will be prepared for that future.

Hello, I’m Chase Roach the new District Executive for the Quanah Parker District. I am looking forward to many years of growth and prosperity in the QP District. I have been a life long Scouter as an Eagle, Order of the Arrow, and Volunteer Assistant Scoutmaster. My last 20 years in retail sales and management has been a great preparation for the next 20 years as a Professional Scout. I look forward to meeting all of you and growing the Scouting Organization we all hold so dear.
Popcorn Success!!
Quanah Parker had several outstanding Popcorn growth units this year, as well as several first year sellers. And, here is how it broke down:
4th Place with a 24% growth in sales was Troop 62. GREAT!!
3rd Place with a 110% growth in sales was Pack 187. AWESOME!!
2nd Place with 152% growth in sales was Pack 707. FANTASTIC!!
And,
1st Place with 714% growth in sales was Pack 29!!!! They also had the highest growth in the Council… WOW INCREDIBLE!! Way to go Pack 29!!!
Great job to all you who participated in funding local scouting, and your units directly!!
Quanah Parker District Christmas Banquet and Recharter Packet Return
On December 8th, 6:30pm, at Christian Heritage Church in Amarillo, we will be having a Pot Luck Dinner Christmas Banquet. Everyone in the Quanah Parker District is invited. It will be a great night of fun, fellowship, and a perfect opportunity to turn in Recharter Packets. Mrs. Lafferty will be contacting each Unit to discuss what yummy vittles each of you will bring. Recharters
This year you have a choice to do your recharter on line or by hand on your hard copy. Reminder that they are due to the Council on December 15th. If you do it online you will still need to print the roaster, get it signed and send it in to the Council by the 15th along with the Charter agreement, money (don’t forget the $1.00 insurance for each youth and adult) and any new applications you have added. Call me if you need my help.

Report to the State Opportunity
The 2012 Annual Report to State Parade and Ceremony has the theme of “Prepared for Life”.
As they have for the past 63 years Scouts from throughout the
State of Texas will converge on Austin on February 4, 2012 to participate in the Annual Report to State Ceremonies and to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America.
Scout units from throughout Texas are invited to participate in the parade and to take advantage of the wonderful education opportunities that are available by visiting the state capitol and the many other institutions and museums found throughout the City of Austin.
The annual event will begin with the gathering of delegations and units at the Congress Avenue / Ann Richards Bridge. Thousands of Scouts will parade up Congress Avenue to the Capitol Building where the delegates will give a report on the service accomplishments of Scouting in their council in the Chambers of the House of Representatives. The parade starts at 9:00 am and units assemble on the bridge between 7:30 am – 8:30 am.
This is a wonderful opportunity for Scouts to participate in a Texas Scouting tradition surrounded by their fellow Scouts, leaders, and dignitaries of their State. Kwahadi Dancers NEW
For Crews, Troops, Dens, Packs, and individual Scouting familiesl
Enjoy a free weekend visit to the Kwahadi Museum and winter shows!
The Kwahadi Dancers, Venturing Crew 9, present the 47th Annual Winter Night Ceremonials on weekends in January and February.
January 20, 21, and 22 will the “1st Annual Scout Weekend”. All troops or individual Scouts and their families may attend the ceremonials as our guests. Families can tour the art and artifacts of the museum prior to the performance. Showtime on Friday and Saturday evenings is 7:30 pm, and the Sunday matinee begins at 3:00 pm.
The Kwahadi Museum is located at 9151 I-40 E. Take I-40 exit #76 (airport), then proceed ½ mile WEST along the north side frontage road to the museum.
Reservations are required to ensure seating. To secure a reservation, call the museum, 335-3175, and identify your family as “Scout Weekend V.I.P.’s”. Come see Scouts many troops around the area perform their famous winter show! Come see the Kwahadis!

Did you know that you can get all your uniform items and other really cool Scouting stuff from our local Scout Shop? If you haven’t come in lately, you are missing the opportunity to see all our new items. If you are looking for that special Christmas gift, how about a Scout item? If you are in to Scrapbooking, we have great items for that hobby as well! Lots of cool things are available! If you live far away, we can mail you anything you might need but if you are in the area, stop in and say hi!
2012 Camp Card Program NEW
Many of you participated in the 2011 Camp Card Program and we know it helped your Scouts attend camps, participate in local activities, and helped your individual unit accounts enabling you to buy items for your unit. If you didn’t participate you really missed out on a fantastic opportunity and hope you will consider participating in 2012. Your District Executive will be contacting you very soon to discuss the program with the key unit leader and get a committment to sell the cards. This is a great program that creates NO risk for the unit but you will reap huge benefits. Look for a call soon!

2012 Merit Badge University NEW
The 2012 Merit Badge University will be held at WT A&M University in Canyon, Texas on January 21, 2012. We are excited to announce that we will offer 16 Merit Badges to choose from and several of those have not been taught here in many years. The classes are limited to 35 Scouts to ensure the integrity of instruction so sign-up early. The information flyer and online registration can be found at the link below.
CAVALCADES
A random drawing will be held late January 2012 for the 2013 Cavalcades. To participate in the drawing, notify Philmont in writing by January 1, 2012 (can be emailed). Upon completion of the drawing, results will be mailed to each interested unit. Selected groups will receive a reservation form that must be approved by their local council and returned with their deposit. A group may not attend in two consecutive seasons on a Cavalcade experience and/or a Backpacking Expedition.
Cavalcade participants will trek on horseback over some of Philmont’s most scenic trails. Designed for Chartered Troops or Venturing Crews, Cavalcade participants acquire riding and packing skills long in use in the American West. Philmont offers two eight-day, eight-night Cavalcades on each arrival date. (June 16, 17, 25, 26, July 5, 6, 14, 15, 24, 25, August 2, 3, 12, 13) The cost for 2013 is $720 for each participant. The crew size is 10-15 participants, including leaders. There is a 200 pound weight limit for all riders, without exception.
Age Requirements for Participation
– Philmont participants for both Expeditions and Cavalcades for 2013 must be 14 years of age OR completed the eighth (8th) grade and be at least 13 years of age.
To avoid disappointment, please do not request or expect exceptions! Philmont can make no exceptions to the minimum age requirement for attendance.
Adult Leadership
– A minimum of two adult leaders is required for both Expeditions and Cavalcades. The maximum number of adults per crew is four.
Amarillo Bulls Hockey Game NEW
The Bulls will host a “Scouting Night” on February 24 at 7:05pm. Tickets will be $8.00. Look for more information on our web site in the next few days!
Injury Reporting
Unit-level volunteers must report to the council any incident that requires treatment beyond Scout rendered first aid. If, say, a cut finger or a twisted ankle is treated on site, no report is needed. If a cut finger requires a visit to the doctor and stitches, the report must be submitted along with any relevent photographs, doctors’ forms etc. The incident form is located at the link below or on our web site in the forms (safety) section.
2013 Philmont Council Contingent NEW
The Council has received approval for a 2013 Philmont Trek. We have 2 Crews (12 each Crew) from July 6-July 28. The cost per person will be $770.00 with a deposit of $100.00 due to the Council Service Center on or before April 15, 2012. Priority will go to Troops who are NOT going to Philmont in 2012 but will entertain them if no one else is interested. For information, contact Scott at 806-358-6500.
Guide to Advancement Update
The revised “Guide to Advancement” is now the official BSA source on advancement the biggest such revision in about 20 years. This change brings clarity and easy-to-read advancement details to Scouts, Scouters, and parents.
Among the many revisions in the guide, there is an important change to the Eagle Scout project requirement. Instead of requiring that a project plan be approved before the Scout begins work on the project, a proposal is now required. This proposal allows Scouts to get approval on his project and then complete the final plan later.
2012 Camp Staff Opportunity NEW
We are interested in talking to you if you have an interest in attending National Camp School (fully paid for by the Council) for the following positions:
Boy Scout Camp: Aquatics Director
Cub Scout Camp: Aquatics Director, Camp Director, Program Director
These positions require a week long school held in March (3-9) and May (12-18- Aquatics and others)
Boy Scout Camp is June 10- July 8 and you must be able to commit to the entire season. Cub Scout Camps are all weekends in June.

Welding Merit Badge
The Welding Merit Badge will debut in December 2011!. “This is not your father’s welding” says David Landon, President of the American Welding Society who helped write the pamphlet. “It’s exciting work, and the technology is just phenomenal”. Requirements include setting up a welding process,learning how to weld safely, designing and completing a welding project, and exploring career opportunities.
2012 Council Reception NEW
The Golden Spread Council will host the 2012 Council Reception on February 12, 2012 at the Kwahadi Kiva in Amarillo, Texas. This event will be held from 4pm-6pm and will recognize Silver Beaver Award recipients, Award of Merit recipients, other award winners, and the Class of 2011 Eagle Scouts. Registration will become available in early January.
Journey to Excellence
What can bring to units? Measurement, guidance, recognition, and more:
1. A framework for planning the year
- The Journey to Excellence standards are based on what successful units do to continually improve.
- If your unit plans to achieve gold or silver, you’ll have a strong and active program.
2. A method for evaluating your unit
- Journey to Excellence provides tangible measurements based on information you are likely already tracking, such as how many campouts you have and how many youth are advancing, and the software uses simple ways to calculate your performance.
3. Guidance in areas where you might do better
- As you track your performance against the Journey to Excellence standards, you can easily see where you could do better.
4. Specific guidelines and standards of what is considered good performance
- Journey to Excellence has specific, simple measures that help you compare what you are doing against the standards.
5. Early warning of potential problem areas
- You are able track any areas where your unit is not performing as you might like and have plenty of time to make corrections.
6. Recognition for good Scouting
- You can proudly receive your bronze, silver, or gold recognition for your Scouting unit for the year.
7. Benchmarking to get ideas and tips from other good units
- You can receive help and best practices in areas where other units have met the gold standard.
- In the areas where you are doing well, you can give help and ideas to other units.
High Plains Eagle Scout Association Eagle Scholarship

2012 NESA scholarship
The applications for the 2012 NESA Eagle Scout scholarships are now available at www.nesa.org. The homepage features a link that leads directly to the forms. Please help us spread the word to all Eagle Scouts in your unit.
These are the only scholarship applications acceptable in 2012. NESA recommends that you establish a link to the applications on your website to ensure that you always distribute the correct version. These applications must be printed and mailed to the national office when completed.
All scholarship applications must be postmarked no later than midnight on January 31, 2012.
