Popcorn 2013

We are planning the 2013 popcorn campaign.  There are several new flavors as well as price packages.  BEST PART is the prizes……attend program preview to see a sample of the potential prizes your scouts can earn.  We need to blow out the popcorn sales this year and let everyone in the Golden Spread Council know that Adobe Walls District can sell that popcorn.

Final thoughts

Summer is almost over.  Recruitment will begin in a few weeks.  I would like everyone to contact me if they have any ideas on how we can recruit the most boys and volunteer leaders for your unit.  We need to have a bang out popcorn sale and don’t forget spook-a-ree this October.  All in all, we will have a super fall this year and I hope everyone is as excited as I am.  Please contact me to discuss any questions you may have.  Hope everyone stays cool, safe and has a blast!

Roundup 2013

As we approach the new school year, it is time once again to focus on new recruits. The Golden Eagle District Executive, Brian Lamirande will be working diligently over the coming weeks to get YOUR unit’s (pack/troop) roundup event scheduled. As you may remember we have a very specific plan for Fall Recruiting because it works. We have found great success in delivering motivational classroom “Boy Talks” on, for example, a Tuesday afternoon and following those talks hosting a “Roundup” event where parents can bring their eager new Scouts to get signed up and ready to start coming to meetings. If your unit has a particular date that is preferred to host your Roundup night, PLEASE Call your District Executive NOW, so we can accommodate your preference.

As Scouting continues to grow strong in the Texas Panhandle and Fall recruiting is upon us, please ask your unit leaders how you can help make it a huge success. Parents are needed to help facilitate these Roundup nights and welcome the new Scouts to the Pack/Troop. Fundraising – Popcorn 2013

Another extremely important item to be included in your Pack/Troop’s annual planning is the ever important aspect of Finance. In order to deliver an AWESOME program that keeps ‘em coming back for more, you need to have $$ in the bank so all the activities that the kiddo’s love can be included in your calendar.

Popcorn is an excellent way to provide that awesome program. Trails End Popcorn has revamped their flavor selection for the 2013 year and the new choices ROCK!! Featuring Buffalo, Bacon Cheddar and Jalepeno Cheddar!! YUM!!   Not only is the Popcorn really tasty, it helps PAY FOR YOUR SCOUTING YEAR!!  …That’s right! If the sale is executed correctly, you can easily fund your pack/troop’s “Ideal Year of Scouting”. In order to be overwhelming successful, your unit NEEDS TO ATTEND A POPCORN KICKOFF!!  At this meeting the details of the sale will be reviewed and techniques on how to be successful will be reviewed. Friends of Scouting

            2014 is around the corner and as proactive Scouts we are already looking and planning into the 2014 year. While 2013 has been very successful pertaining to fundraising it only helps us one year at a time. In order to provide awesome summer program and other Council activities we need to start securing the funds to continue operations for the 2014 year. Your Unit (pack/troop) plays a vital role in the success of our council. Through Family Enrollment presentations conducted your Blue&Gold’s and Courts of Honor, our council is able to allocate those desperately needed resources which are critical to our council’s survival. We can’t do it without your help. As you complete your annual planning and Unit Annual Calendar, be sure to include when you will hold these recognition events and share those dates with your District Executive so that presentations can be scheduled. The Family Enrollment presentation is quick, less than 5minutes long and will not take away from magic that our youth experience through the joy of recognition for their accomplishments.

In order to keep Scouting alive and well, your help is needed to get your units (pack/troop) Family Friends of Scouting presentation scheduled and completed. Thank you in advance for your attention to this very important aspect of Scouting.

Boy Scout Archery Contest– NEW

The 2nd annual Boy Scout Archery Competition is in the works….We are excited to expand this program opportunity this year to accommodate more shooters. Last year we filled the 30 allotted spots very quickly and saw a tremendous response to the event. There will be 50 openings this year competing in 2 separate divisions; Compound Division and Longbow Division. The event flyer is now available on the Golden Eagle District Webpage and more information will be coming as to when registration will begin.

Spearman Fun-in-the-Sun Recap

Thank you to all who participated in the Spearman Fun-in-the-Sun at the city park! We all had a good time shooting BB guns and bows and arrows and watching the boys build derby rockets and racing them. We even got to see the historic “Perryton Space Derby Track” make an appearance. It is about 30 years old, and, it is in great shape! Thanks to the City of Spearman for allowing for free swimming for Scouts. It was great to see youth and adults from packs 142, 163, 256, 257, and 578 participate in the events of the day! Thanks also to Myranda and Eric Newcomb for overseeing the event, and all the volunteers and parents who made it happen!

Dalhart Program Preview

For those of you who have not signed up for Program Preview this year, the second Lone Wolf Program Preview is happening in Dalhart, TX, on August 10th from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. I will be there to tell you all about planning your ideal Scouting Year! There will be informational flyers about activities, Roundtable, and, other useful information! See each and every one of you there!

Lone Wolf Camping and Activity Corner-Museum of the Plains, Perryton, TX

Hey, Folks! I just wanted to tell you a little bit about the Museum of the Plains in Perryton, TX! It’s a great place for Scouts to visit, full of history and neat artifacts and displays, as well as old buildings that have a great story behind each and every one of them! One of the new exhibits is one about America’s Pass-time, baseball! Their hours are from Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., and 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. on Sundays. Check out their website at http://www.museumoftheplains.com, or, swing by next time you are in Perryton! It is a fun and educational place to take your Scouts!

Round Table will start back up in September in Shamrock and Memphis.  Dates will be announced.  Fun and important get together for all adults and parents!

Memphis Day Camp

Once again, Memphis Fun in the Sun Day Camp was a huge Success! Thank you T433 for hosting the event.  Polly Mcafee, Joe, Mandy Joseph and Ray Jarmillo, Larry and Nicole Beams.  You people Rock when it comes to volunteering for the Boy Scouts of America!  Santa Fe had 5 out of 7 packs who attended the outstanding and fun event.  It was great to see P17 from Claude, P450 from Childress, P431 from Wellington, P473 from Shamrock and P425 from Mclean.

FALL RECRUITMENT       

It’s that time of year again; Time to start scheduling school recruitments for this fall.  My goal is to recruit 100 boys, (cubs and troops) this fall.  If you have a specific date you would like the registration night to be then please call me now, so I can get it on my calendar.

Injury Reporting 

Unit-level volunteers must report to the council any incident that requires treatment beyond Scout rendered first aid.  If, say, a cut finger or a twisted ankle is treated on site, no report is needed.  If a cut finger requires a visit to the doctor and stitches, the report must be submitted along with any relevent photographs, doctors’ forms etc.  The incident form is located at the link below or on our web site in the forms (safety) section.

Shooting Clays Tournament

GREAT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!!!!

It is hard to believe but it is now time to begin to finalize our plans for the Golden Spread Council’s Sporting Clays Classic Tournament and Auction.  This year’s tournament will be our eleventh Annual Sporting Clays Classic!  This year’s Classic will be held on Friday, August 23 and Saturday, August 24, and will again be held at beautiful Camp Don Harrington.  As you probably know, all proceeds from the tournament go towards supporting our local Boy Scout programs.

I’m very proud to say that our tournament has grown from 24 teams in 2003, to this year’s projected 75 teams and 300 shooters.  These teams will come from Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Colorado, all in support of our Scouts.

With this many teams and shooters, the Council is in need of 200-250 volunteers to help us run a fun and safe tournament. This letter is a request (a strong plea) to you and members of your troop, company or family to consider volunteering some time to help us during this year’s Sporting Clays Tournament.   

Volunteers are needed in lots of different areas and for various times during the duration of the event. Volunteers will be needed on both Friday, August 23 and on Saturday, August 24.  As a volunteer, you can help on one day or for both days.  Every volunteer will be fed lunch on Friday, have an opportunity to shoot 5o clays on Friday after the tournament participants leave at 4pm, and will be fed breakfast and lunch on Saturday. In addition to that, the first 150 volunteers to sign up will receive a commemorative t-shirt as recognition for their time and service.

Wood Badge Training Course – NEW

We, along with the South Plains Council (Lubbock) will be hosting Wood Badge.  This adult training is for all Adults Leaders (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturing).  Wood Badge is advanced training that will help you not only develop and be the best you can in Scouting but in your personal life as well.  Check out the link below for all the information.

2013 Spook-O-Ree   NEW

The 2013 Spook-O-Ree is just around the corner.  This event is Fall themed with Hayrides, Inflatable’s, BB Gun shooting, Archery shooting, Carnival type games, Spook Walk and Haunted House.  Three Saturdays at Camp Don Harrington and one Saturday at Camp MK Brown, allows all Scouts to participate and see how much FUN Scouts can have.  Originally, the Spook-O-Ree was the event to come to if you were a newly recruited Scout to show how much fun Scouting could be but now it’s become one of the best attended events in the council by both new and current Cub Scouts.  Look for more information soon!

Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow Training  NEW

This one day adult training will be held on December 7 at Polk Street United Methodist Church in Amarillo.  Lots of exciting and innovative classes are conducted by volunteers for volunteers.  Make you Scouting life easier by learning how to effectively conduct meetings, how to plan a Blue and gold banquet, how to deal with challenging Scouts, how to cook some outstanding meals and cobblers at your next Pack campout.
