Family Friends of Scouting

The Golden Spread Council will invest almost $1.5 million in the youth of the panhandle of Texas again this year.  85% of these funds go to directly support Cub Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Venture Crews (as well as Learning for Life Groups and Posts) with quality personnel (Scout professionals, office support staff, scout shop staff and camp rangers) and all aspects of the program your unit enjoys (camp property, camping programs, district activities, training, recognition items, etc.) . The Golden Spread Council will invest over $135 per youth member to provide quality Scouting again this year. 

The greatest percentage (36%) of monies to do this comes from direct donations from our “Friends of Scouting” (FOS).  Without this direct support from individuals in our community and our scouting family (adult leaders, parents, and yes, professional staff), the scouts in your pack, troop, crew or post would not have access to the quality programs that they do.

Now is the time to make arrangements for a Family Friends of Scouting presentation at your next Pack Meeting, Blue & Gold Banquet or Boy Scout Court of Honor.  It only takes 15-20 minutes to invite the parents and adult leaders of your unit to join their friends in the Golden Eagle District in making the same commitment.  Contact Mario Perez (358-6500 or mperez@bsamail.org or Bob Altman at raltman@bsamail.org to schedule your unit’s Family Friends of Scouting presentation.

All scouting adult leaders are encouraged to attend Roundtable.  We meet the 1st Thursday of each month at 7 pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church at 4100 S Coulter. The church is located on the west side of Coulter between 34th and 45th.  Come and get to know your fellow Tiger Cub Den Leaders, Cub Scout Den Leaders, Webelos Den Leaders, Cubmasters, Assistant Cubmasters, Pack Committee members, Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Troop Committee members, etc. Come to not only learn about what’s going on in Scouting in Amarillo – but to share your ideas (and maybe win a neat door prize)!

Every Scout Deserves a Trained Adult Leader!

There are two training opportunities coming up in April and May.  On April 10th there will be a BALOO training at Camp Don Harrington, and on May 8th there will be an Outdoor Leader Skills Training at Camp Don Harrington as well.   For more information go to the Golden Spread website.

Adult troop leaders of Boy Scouts needing either Eagle Project Reviews or Eagle Boards of Review should contact Golden Eagle Advancement Chairman Gary Ries at 358-0552 to schedule them.  Eagle Project Reviews are conducted on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm in conjunction with Roundtable at St. Thomas Catholic Church.  Eagle Boards of Review are conducted on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm at the Scout Office.

Boy Scout Outdoor Leader Skills Training

Boy Scout Leader Outdoor Skills Training is being offered on April 23rd through the 25th , 2010.  Cost is $30 (to cover food & supplies).  Check in begins at 6 p.m., Friday evening.  There will be an orientation meeting and course activities in the evening.  The course will run from 7 p.m. on Friday until 12 noon on Sunday.  Location: Palo Duro Reservoir, Spearman, Texas.  This training is for all registered Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters and Cub leaders who will be moving up into a Boy Scout Troop, with their sons.  This is outdoor skills training, so you will be camping out for two nights.  Please prepare accordingly.  Registration will be limited to the first 20 leaders to pay their fees.  Reserve your spot now!  Go here: Training flyer for more information.

Family Friends of Scouting

It’s time to finalize your unit’s Family Friends of Scouting presentation.  Without this financial support from our leaders and our scouting families, the Golden Spread Council would not be able to provide the quality programs, training and facilities you expect, for our scouts.  Plan on having a Family Friends of Scouting presentation at your next pack meeting, Pinewood Derby, Blue & Gold Banquet, or troop court of honor.  Call Steve Knollenberg at 580-651-2615, or Audrey House at 580-652-2085, to schedule a presentation that is convenient for your unit.

Palo Duro Lake Cleanup

The District Committee is looking for a date to reschedule the Palo Duro Lake Cleanup.  We still want to have this worthwhile service project, before this summer, if at all possible.  Watch for a Constant Contact announcing the outcome of our planning.  This event is a great time for our district’s units to get together, complete a worthwhile service project that benefits the Palo Duro River Authority, and enjoy the fellowship of Scouting. 

Scouting for Food

No blizzard this year; just 50 mile per hour winds, and rain in some locations, on collection day.  Through your efforts, 3,619 pounds of food was collected across our District, for our local food pantries!  This food will help our neighbors, who need assistance in feeding their families.  The largest collection occurred in Perryton, where Pack 256 and Troop 256 collected 750 pounds of food.

Order of the Arrow Unit Elections

All Scoutmasters should be reviewing their Troop records to identify which youth members are eligible for election into the Order of the Arrow, this spring.  To be eligible, the youth needs to be at least a First Class Scout and have completed fifteen days and nights of camping in the last two calendar years, including one, but not more than one, long-term camp of 5, or 6 nights.  The remaining 9 or 10 nights must consist of overnight, weekend, or other short-term camping.  “Cabin camping”, does not count.  Chapter Unit election coordinators will be contacting each Scoutmaster, to schedule an election for Troops that have eligible candidates.  A Troop may not conduct its own election!

District Roundtable

Roundtable is this Thursday, April 1st at 7 pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church at 4100 S Coulter. VERY IMPORTANT!If you did not sign up your Unit for the Council Camporee before the deadline, Thursday April 1st at 5:00 PM; you still have a couple more hours because Roundtable is your last chance to register!! After Thursday there will be no exceptions!!

District Committee & Commissioner Meeting

Both meetings are on Thursday, April 8th at the Scout Office. The District Committee Meeting is at 6:00 pm, and the Commissioner meeting is right after. It is very exciting to see that the Quanah Parker District Committee keeps growing, and it is ready to work and serve the youth in our community.

Every Scout Deserves a Trained Adult Leader!

Very soon any unit that does not have trained adult leaders will not be able to rechart. When you are trained it makes it a lot easier for you to get involved and do things right; and the boys get a better program and a better experience. Therefore this 2010, the Golden Spread Council’s goal is to have 100% leaders trained in all districts. If your unit has changed Cubmaster or Scoutmaster, or has new parents involved in it; they should get training right away. All the necessary training is on-line at https://myscouting.scouting.org/. If you need your Scouting ID in order to log in, please feel free to contact the Scout Office at (806) 358-6500 and ask any of the staff. Also, there will be additional training during the year so pay attention for dates and sign up. If for some reason you and your leaders cannot come to training, call Katie Loyall at 806-220-9693 and let her know. Katie along with the QP Unit Commissioners will come to you and train everybody. Don’t let this drag for too long, get TRAINED!!

BALOO Training

Are you a new (or experienced) Cub Scout leader with a desire to plan and carry out an exciting outdoor experience for your Cub Scout pack; but you have very limited camping experience?  Then this course is just for you!  You will learn the focus of Cub Scout-level outdoor program, acquire the skills to plan and carry out a successful overnight activity; and increase your knowledge of the resources available to you. BALOO training will take place on Saturday, April 10, 2010 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in the Scout Office. The cost is $5.00 per person and this fee will cover materials and lunch on day of training.

District Pinewood Derby

The Quanah Parker District wants to thank all the units that participated of our District Pinewood Derby this past Saturday. We not only worked towards a good cause, like Scouting For Food, but we also got to have a lot of fun racing our Pinewood Derby cars. Congratulations to all the winners!! Next year we will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place of every unit; come to race their cars and compete for the QP District Championship.

Fishing Derby

Family fishing opportunity for Cub Scouts! Enjoy fishing, food and fun contests.  This information will be sent to Cubmasters and Den Leaders, and flyers will be passed around at Roundtable.  Please share this information with the parents in your Pack. There will be prizes awarded for 1st Fish, Longest Fish, Heaviest Fish, Smallest Fish, etc.  Lunch is served before awards ceremony!

This event will be on Saturday, May 15, from 9 am to 1 pm at Martin Road Park located on NE 15th & Martin Road. Fee is $7 per scout and includes patch and hotdog lunch.  Fee for adult leaders; parents and siblings is $3 for hotdog lunch. Pre-Registration is required! Participants registering on or before Monday, May 10, will receive their patch at the Fishing Derby.

COPE is a series of physical, mental and emotional challenges facilitated by trained staff directed at enhancing personal growth. What’s a Kid to Do?

This annual event is April 10, 2010 from 1pm to 6pm at the Westgate Mall in Amarillo.  If your Scout Unit would like to put up a display and hand out Scouting Information (we will provide) please contact Scott at 806-358-6500 no later than April 6.  In the past, we’ve had several units take a turn at manning the table and this has been done in shifts.  The table is provided for our use.  This is a great way to do a little recruiting for your unit and to show the community how much fun Scouting is.  UPDATE:  We have one unit at this time for the 12:30-2:30pm slot and we need 2 more units to sign-up for this great opportunity.

Centennial Spring Camporee

If excitement is what your Boy Scouts are looking for then look no further!  This Camporee will be held on April 16-18 at Camp Don Harrington.  We will also have a morning program for all Cub Scouts and Webelos so they too can get a sneak preview of what Boy Scouts do!   All participating units should be practicing the scheduled events so you are prepared on Saturday!   Registration ends on April 1 with no exceptions.  For all the information and events, please click on the link below.

Camporee Information

Order of the Arrow- Beaver Day 2010

What is it?

Please join us at the Camp MK Brown. on Saturday May 1, 2010 for a day of service.  We will have several camp projects set up for your scout unit. Projects are expected to be completed by 5 pm.

Registration:

Pre-registration is required. Please register by calling or emailing Trent Stephens by Monday April 26, 2010. if no answer please leave message with phone number. Registering early will allow us to provide enough food for the Saturday lunch.  Lunch will be provided by the Nischa Achowalogen Lodge #486 to all scout units that participate in the Beaver Day event. Lunch will be served between 12:00 pm – 12:45pm in the Dining Hall.  Check-in: Saturday May 1, 2010 between 8:00 am – 8:30am.

What to bring:

Old clothes and shoes, gloves, hat, (you will get dirty) and a canteen or water bottle to keep hydrated. Other helpful items: battery operated drills (& bits), trailer to help haul tree limbs, chain saws, bow saws, axe, anything else you can think of to make the work easier. Projects may include painting, wading in water, or mud. Clothes may get dirty or torn.

Camping:

Your troop may camp during the weekend however please note that the OA Lodge will only provide lunch on Saturday. You unit will be responsible for all other meals. The dining hall and admin building are reserved for OA activities. Units must follow the two leader deep rule. Sign-in for weekend camping will be at the Administration Building on Friday April 30, 2010 between 7pm – 9pm .

We will have open up Lazy S, T-Bar, and Flying V for weekend camping on the Beaver Day Weekend. 

Medical form:

Please bring a copy of your BSA Annual Health and Medical Record. All participants must have a current BSA Annual Health and Medical Record [http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34605_Letter.pdf] on file for the weekend and return to the troop leader when checking out.  If your Annual Health and Medical Record form is not on file with your registration you must bring it with you or you will be sent home, NO EXCEPTIONS.

Cost?

There is cost for no cost to your unit. This includes all Saturday Lunch Only.

We will have  a Trading Post / Snack Bar open!   So bring extra money to buy new items and to build up your trading stock.

Camp Staff Needed

We are getting ready for the Camping season and we need youth staff for Camp MK Brown.  Applicants must be 15 years old or older and be willing to commit from June 13 through July 3.  We offer paid positions, tent housing, great meals, and the opportunity to have a lot of fun.  We have new Camp leadership this year wo have lots of great things planned for the staff.  Applications can be found at the link below.

Are you a Trained Leader?

The BSA has mandated that each Council has 100 percent of its Top Leaders~~ Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, and Venture Crew Leader~~ fully trained this year.  We will be offering many training opportunities to get you trained and once the 2010-2011 calendar is published in August, you will see even more training opportunities.  What we have found however, is that many leaders do not have the basic training which includes Youth Protection (good for two years only), Fast Start, and This is Scouting all which can be done on-line in the comfort of your home.  All you need is your BSA membership Card (you will need the ID number) and a computer with Internet.  If you know someone who needs the training and doesn’t have a computer or internet access, let them know we have set up a computer at the Scout Office to be used by any volunteer who needs to take on-line course.  If you can’t locate your card, please call the office at 806-358-6500 and Stephen can give you your ID number.  Please take care of your training requirements now.  Remember that “Every Boy Deserves a Trained Leader”-are you a Trained Leader?

NYLT Information

Camp School Attendees Wanted

The Council is looking to increase its pool of Scouters who are trained in various areas that require National Camp School certification. Specifically, we are looking for Shooting Sports Directors, Aquatics Directors,  Aquatics Supervisors, Cub and Boy Scout Program Directors, Camp Commissioners, COPE Directors, and Climbing Directors.  You must be a registered adult over the age of 21 years, be willing to attend school for 5 days in May 2010  and possibly be able to work at Camp MK Brown for Summer Camp and/or Camp Don Harrington for Cub Scout Resident Camp.   If this is something you may be interested in, please contact Scott as soon as possible to discuss this great opportunity.

Philmont Training Center

The Philmont Training Center is nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northeastern New Mexico near Cimarron on the grounds of Philmont Scout Ranch.  More then 70 week-long courses are conducted each summer for unit, district and council volunteers.  A special feature of the Training Center is that families are invited and encouraged to share in the experience.  A staff is available to lead family members of all ages through a variety of activities that include horse rides, hikes, crafts, games, nature walks, archery, and much more.

Eighth Annual Sporting Clays Classic

It is hard to believe but it is now time to start preparing for the Golden Spread Council’s Sporting Clays Classic tournament and auction.  This year’s tournament will be our Eighth Annual Sporting Clays Classic.  This year’s Classic will be held on Friday, August 20 and Saturday, August 21. Our tournament has grown from 24 teams in 2003, to this year’s projected 50 teams and over 200 shooters.  These teams will come from Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Colorado all in support of Scouting.  As you know, all proceeds from the tournament go towards supporting our local Boy Scout programs.

With this many teams and shooters, we are in need of 125+ volunteers to help us run a fun and safe tournament. This letter is a request to you and to members of your troop or crew to consider volunteering some time to help us during this year’s Sporting Clays Tournament.  We respectfully ask that all volunteers be 13 years old or older (or be accompanied by an Adult) due to nature of this tournament. 

Volunteers are needed in lots of different areas and for various times. Volunteers will be needed on both Friday, August 20 and on Saturday, August 21.  As a volunteer, you can help on one or both days.  You can also specify to work mornings or afternoons or all day.  Every volunteer will receive a t-shirt as recognition for their time and help.

Scout Leaders please share this information with your fellow leaders, Scout parents and with your troop and crew members.

Shooting Sports Camp

Shooting Sports Camp will expose Scouts to Shooting Sports disciplines and activities in the areas of Archery, Rifle, 5-Stand, Trap, and Action Archery. Friday and  Saturday evening will be packed with Shooting Sports related demonstrations and exhibits. The NRA has generously provided some of our camp materials.

This camp is open to all registered Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts and will be held on Friday, July 9, 2010 through Sunday, July 11, 2010. Check-in between 3p.m. and 5p.m. – Camp Don Harrington is located 12 miles south of Amarillo, TX on South Washington Street.

 The cost is $95.00 for Scouts and $85.00 for adults that register before Friday, June 18th, 2010.  After that date, the fees go to $105.00 for Scouts and $90.00 for adults. 

Camp Fees will include use of camp, archery equipment, guns, all necessary ammunition and targets, instruction by trained staff, and various recognition items. Meals include a Friday Evening dinner, Saturday’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and Sunday’s breakfast and lunch.  Dinner on Friday will begin at 5pm along with camp orientation and safety briefings.  More information will be available in the next newsletter!

Flag Retirement Ceremony

A Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held at Lake Meredith Amphitheater on August 28 2010 @ 7pm.  On Saturday August 28, 2010 at 7pm, Borger Boy Scout Troops 560 and 507 will be holding a public flag retirement ceremony at Lake Meredith Amphitheater (adjacent to the Fritch Fortress camping area).  The ceremony is free and all are welcome to attend.  Any scouts wishing to help retire flags are welcome, please come about a half hour early for instructions.

The ceremony will last about one hour, and we have about 200 flags left over from last year’s ceremony.  No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.  The grommets that are left after retiring the flags will be saved as tokens of remembrance.

Northern Tier National High Adventure Program

If your Boy Scout Troop or Venture Crew is interested in going to the Northern Tier High Adventure Base in 2011, give Scott a call at 806-358-6500 to get the information you will need to make a reservation.  Reservations begin April 1, 2010 and are first come, first serve.

Health and Safety Support Committee Confirms BSA Policy on Physical Exams

Last month, the BSA’s Health and Safety Support Committee, which is composed of volunteers in the health and safety field across the country, thoroughly reviewed the BSA’s policies requiring physical examinations to be completed and signed by a certified and licensed health-care provider-a physician (MD, DO), nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant. This included a review of material provided by various individuals and organizations representing the chiropractic community.

The committee determined the current requirements remain the best policy for the BSA, based on the fact that chiropractors are not certified to treat all of the identified high-risk factors included in the BSA’s activities (available at www.scouting.org, under “Scouting Safely“) and are not regulated universally across the United States.

Simply stated, physicians (MD, DO), nurse practitioners, and physician’s assistants will be the only health-care providers to perform physical for the Boy Scouts of America.

Campmaster Training Now On-Line

Are you interested in spending a weekend at Camp Don and staying in the new Campmaster Building?  If so, why not join the Campmaster Corps.  Duties including checking in units, making sure they are settled in their campsites, giving advice on how to properly use our equipment and facilities and checking them out upon departure.  This is a great opportunity to help units grow in the camping program and enjoy a weekend at camp.  The Campmaster building is ready for you to enjoy.  Central air and heat, full kitchen and bath plus two bedrooms and a living room await you!  Training is now on-line!.  Go to the link below, take the training and then call the Ranger to set up a date and time so he can show you where the utilities connections are at Camp and all the other things you need to know.  Once that is completed, we will add you to the list of Campmaster!

Merit Badge Counselor Registration

If you are a current registered Merit Badge Counselor, you must recertify every year.  It’s a simple process but must be done now.  Please click on the link below, complete and print the forms and send it to the office.  If you wish to be a Merit Badge Counselor, you must complete an Adult Registration Form and the form linked below.  There is no charge to be a Counselor.

Venturing Program Changes

The National Executive Board recently approved a resolution to change the eligibility requirements for Venturing to ensure consistency among Venturing, high-adventure bases, and other core programs.

The current age and grade eligibility requirement for participation in the Venturing program is 14 years of age and completion of the eighth grade.

Effective May 1, 2010, the minimum age requirement will be changed to 14 years of age, or 13 years of age and completion of the eighth grade. The maximum age for participation remains under 21 years of age.

Kwahadi Dancers Information

40 young men and women have entered training to be in the Kwahadi show since Thanksgiving!  The Kwahadis will be performing for Scouting’s 100th Anniversary celebrations at the William Boyce Museum in Illinois and at the National Jamboree in Virginia, and will also present 4 shows for thousands of Scouters from around America at the Philmont Training Center this summer!  This is a good time for area Scouts/Venturers, age 11 to 18 to train to be a part of the adventures this summer.  Come visit a rehearsal at the Kwahadi Museum, 9151 I-40 E on Sundays from 1 – 4:30.  We think you’ll like it, and you’ll love the opportunity to perform for Scouting events and camp all across America this summer!  Kwahadi – the adventure continues!

Summer Travel Plans

The Kwahadis have been invited to perform at the William Boyce Museum 100th Anniversary of Scouting in Ottawa, IL on Saturday, June 12, 2010 and also to present 4 shows at the 100th Anniversary of Scouting National Jamboree at Ft. A. P. Hill, VA on July 27 – 30, 2010.  We will be traveling northward towards Chicago June 7 – 15 and eastward to Virginia July 19 – August 2.

May We Perform For You Along The Way?

We have several dates available for shows for camps and Scouting/church events on our way to and from these performances.  Our route is flexible.  If you would like a Kwahadi show for your pack, troop, district, council, community, event, or camp please contact us at your earliest convenience.  In the summer of 2011 we are looking at either a show tour into Nova Scotia, Canada with our grand friend Mike Reid, OR across the western states!

Home Shows and Scout Lodging

The Kwahadis will perform Song of the Eagle at the Kwahadi Kiva on May 28, 29, 30, June 4, 5, 6*, 18, 19, 25, 22, July 2, 9, 10, 11*, 16, 17, 2010 (Sunday 3 pm matinees).  Over 2500 Scouts spent the night in the Kiva last summer.  We will schedule additional shows on evenings when we have enough visiting Scouts or tour bus groups.   Lodging, meals, performances, and museum are available.

Philmont Shows

The Kwahadis will perform at the Philmont Training Center at 7:00 pm for hundreds of Scouters of all over America on June 14, 21, July 12, and July 19.  This will be the 25th year of Kwahadi shows at Philmont!

Kwahadis Celebrated 65th Anniversary with Grand Adventures Last Year!

The Kwahadi program began in Troop 9 in the fall of 1944.  Since that time over 1600 boys and girls have presented over 4000 performances in 48 states and overseas.  As the 65th Anniversary year began in the fall of 2008, 25 Kwahadis represented North America and performed with the Korean National Ballet in the opening ceremony of the International Xtreme Games in Busan, S. Korea.  Afterwards the group present five shows in various venues around the city during their 10 day visit, and enjoyed site-seeing and the fine hospitality of the Korean hosts!

Last summer, 63 Kwahadis and friends from the Kossa Dancers of Louisiana traveled to Europe and presented 18 performances over three weeks in the U.K. and Ireland before ending with a weekend visit to Paris, France!  We met Scouting folks all across Ireland, N. Ireland, Scotland, and England.  Our Scouting hosts provided us with an adventure we will never forget!
