Effective Dates Announced for Scout Oath and Law Change  NEW

Last year, the National Executive Board passed a resolution that, in support of the mission of the Boy Scouts of America, all programs would begin using the Scout Oath and Law. Recently, there have been a number of questions about the effective date of this change, which primarily affects Cub Scouting and Venturing.

The resolution reads, in part: “effective with the release of youth handbooks and leader aids supporting this and other changes related to Strategic Plan Goal 411.” The release of these materials (and the effective date of the change) will be May 2014 for Venturing and May 2015 for Cub Scouting.

Cooking Merit Badge

Significant changes are coming to the Cooking merit badge. First, this badge will become Eagle-required beginning Jan. 1, 2014. In addition, there will be a major overhaul to the requirements, which will take effect Jan. 1, 2015.

The addition of the Cooking merit badge to the Eagle-required list means that, regardless of when a Scout earned the Life rank or began working on the Eagle Scout rank, he must earn the Cooking merit badge to become an Eagle Scout (unless he fulfills all the requirements, except his board of review, before Jan. 1, 2014).

As for the changes to the requirements, they’ll appear in a revised merit badge pamphlet that will be released during 2013. The new requirements then become effective Jan. 1, 2015, with the release of Boy Scout Requirements, No. 34765.

Scouts who have already earned the Cooking merit badge are not required to re-earn the badge under the new requirements in order to qualify for the Eagle Scout Award.

Cinematography Merit Badge now called Moviemaking

Lights, camera, action! The Cinematography merit badge has been renamed Moviemaking. The change was made to reflect the many elements that go into creating a movie.

Aside from some minor updates from the Merit Badge Maintenance Task Force, the requirements and content for the merit badge are essentially the same. Also unchanged is the actual award emblem.

Regardless of its name, a Scout may only earn and get credit for one or the other. Also, the name change does not affect Scouts who have previously completed or who are currently working on the Cinematography merit badge.

The pamphlet bearing the new name is scheduled for delivery to local councils in late November 2013, and the change will be reflected in the 2014 Boy Scout Requirements book.

2014 Merit Badge University  NEW

The 2014 MBU is scheduled for January 25 at WT A&M University in Canyon, Texas.  The registration and all details are below.

Quanah Parker District Committee & Roundtable

Steve, Gemma, and myself, would like to invite every Unit Leader to attend our end of year celebration/Roundtable. Thursday, December 5th, at 7:00PM is all about a year of celebration, food and fellowship, Youth Protection, and Recharter turn in. The District Committee will start setting up and getting ready at 6:30PM, and everyone else that wants to come early is welcome. Gemma and the Unit Commissioners will be contacting everyone by phone to try and have an accurate count for attendees. Any snacks and grub are welcome, and encouraged. Last year we had a GREAT time and had lots of cool food to enjoy. This year will not be any different. The Key 3 looks forward to seeing everyone Thursday.

See you at Roundtable and lets have a GREAT Holiday Season!

Great job selling popcorn, and getting it delivered. Now it’s time to pay the check. All Popcorn monies are due Wednesday, December 5th, to the council office, by 5:00PM. Remember, your units next incentive is tied to having all monies in by that time and date. If anyone has any dilemmas please let us know before hand, and each unit only turns in the monies owed to the council. Not everything. Pat at the council office 806.358.6500 can help with this if needed. And one check from your unit is preferred—Again, Pat can help with that.

See you at Roundtable~

Recharter’s Now Due– NEW!

Unit Leaders

Please mark you calendars now and “save the date” for Thursday, December 5th 2013 for the annual Recharter Turn In taking place at the monthly Roundtable meeting, 7:00pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

Every year ALL registered Scouters renew their annual membership through a process known as “Rechartering”. As our membership is only valid for 1 calendar year at a time (1/1 – 12/31), we must renew each year and this process is vital in keeping your pack/troop/team/crew/ship/post active and eligible to continue operations. Need help completing the rechartering process, Call Brian at 806-220-9158.

Annual District Banquet & Eagle Recognition Ceremony – NEW DATE!!

Save the Date, Thursday January 16th 2014!

Our Annual District Recognition banquet has been moved from January 9th to January 16th, 2014. More information can be found on the Golden Eagle District Webpage located on

Friends of Scouting

2014 is around the corner and as proactive Scouts we are already looking and planning into the 2014 year. While 2013 has been very successful pertaining to fundraising it only helps us one year at a time. In order to provide awesome summer program and other Council activities we need to start securing the funds to continue operations for the 2014 year. Your Unit (pack/troop) plays a vital role in the success of our council. Through Family Enrollment presentations conducted your Blue&Gold’s and Courts of Honor, our council is able to allocate those desperately needed resources which are critical to our council’s survival. We can’t do it without your help. As you complete your annual planning and Unit Annual Calendar, be sure to include when you will hold these recognition events and share those dates with your District Executive so that presentations can be scheduled. The Family Enrollment presentation is quick, less than 5minutes long and will not take away from magic that our youth experience through the joy of recognition for their accomplishments.

In order to keep Scouting alive and well, your help is needed to get your units (pack/troop) Family Friends of Scouting presentation scheduled and completed. Thank you in advance for your attention to this very important aspect of Scouting.

Journey to Excellence

Want to know how your unit (pack, troop, team, crew, post or ship) compares to the Gold Standard?

Download this year’s Unit Scorecard found at…and find out.

We strive to provide our youth with the best possible Scouting experience, and the Journey to Excellence, or JTE program helps us to achieve that goal. The Journey to Excellence program outlined by the Boys Scouts of America, (replacing the “Quality Unit” program in 2010), helps to guide unit leaders by providing “roadmap” to a successful, quality Scouting program. Check out the scorecard that best represents your Scouting unit and keep track of your progress throughout the 2013 year.

Scorecards are submitted during the annual re-chartering process which will be discussed in detail at each monthly Roundtable!
