Great job on selling popcorn everyone!! It’s not over yet either! If you would like to do a second round of selling there is an opportunity for that.  The flyer for it was sent to all scout masters and cub masters.  Don’t forget to pick up your initial order either Friday night of the 5th or Saturday morning of the 6th.

I just wanted to put out a thanks you to all who helped put together the 2010 Spook-O-Ree!  We had great attendance by the cub scouts and from what I hear they had a lot of fun!


Don’t forget to re-charter your unit this year! I will be handing out the re-charter packets when you come pick up your popcorn.

At the November Roundtable we will have a workshop on charter renewal and we will be distributing the re-charter packets.   Every unit needs to have the unit leader or the person who will be responsible for the re-charter present.   We will also be scheduling Friends of Scouting presentations at your Blue and Gold Banquet or your Court of Honor.   Please be prepared to sign up your unit by having that date available when you come to Roundtable.  We will also be scheduling the pick-up times for the popcorn distribution on Saturday, November 6th.   You do not want to miss this meeting.

There will be no adult leaders meetings (Round Tables), in November.  The next scheduled meetings will be in December.  There will be a recharter training meeting in early November.  Watch for a Constant Contact, with the details.

Popcorn Pickup

The sales portion of our annual popcorn sales campaign is now complete.  Popcorn delivery points will be in Dalhart, Perryton and Guymon, again this year.  Popcorn will be available for pickup on Saturday, November 6th,  2010. 

A detailed pickup schedule (including maps of all locations) will be sent out via Constant Contact, after Wednesday, November 3rd, based on each Unit’s choice of pickup locations.  Please be on time for your scheduled pickup.  Your fellow volunteers, who are helping with the distribution, really appreciate your consideration.

Holiday-2nd Effort Popcorn Sale

Some of our Units have expressed an interest in having an expanded Popcorn Sale.  Their newest Scouts did not have the opportunity to sell for as long a time period as their returning Scouts.  Some of our Units started their program year later than normal.  Some leaders have heard the complaint, “no one came by our house and we wanted to buy popcorn.”  You have asked, we have listened!  We can all use additional money to put on the great Program Activities that our kids deserve!  Trails End has given our Council special permission to do this, to meet our Unit’s needs.  This is a great opportunity for all of our Units to earn additional money!

Annual District Banquet

The annual Lone Wolf District Banquet will be held at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, November 20, 2010.  We will be honoring the 2010 Lone Wolf Eagle Scout and District Award of Merit recipients.  This year’s banquet will be held in Spearman, Texas.  This is the annual business meeting for the District.  Watch for more details to follow, via Constant Contact.

School Night for Scouting – Fall Recruiting

Our District’s recruiting efforts for this year are still underway.  Our District is short a total of 66 scouts, for the end of this year.  As you continue to sign up new scouts we need to make every effort to get their applications turned in quickly.  Recharter time is rapidly approaching and we want all the new boys & leaders entered into ScoutNet, before you start the on-line portion of the recharter process.  One of the benefits to you is that you won’t have to enter the new recruits yourself, during the online recharter process.

Unit Recharters

Unit recharter time is almost upon us.  All of our unit charters expire on December 31, 2010.  We need to have the rechartering process completed by December 15, 2010.  This allows our Council staff adequate time to correct any errors, or help you with online procedural questions.  We are utilizing online rechartering again this year.  This is our sixth year to do a portion of the recharter via the Internet.

What does your unit need to be doing to get ready?

  • Complete any applications for any new Scouts, or leaders, and submit them, along with the required registration and Boy’s Life fees, to the Council Office, now.  This will save you from having to manually enter new members and leaders during online rechartering.
  • All applications for membership need to be complete: all birthdays, Social Security numbers and drivers license numbers filled in, all signature blocks signed (this includes unit Committee Chair and Chartered Organization Head or Representative’s approval signatures for all adults, and Authorization for Background Check) and application dates.
  • Recruit/designate one adult leader from your unit to complete the online recharter portion of the process.
  • Remember, rechartering is not complete until all paperwork and fees have been received by the Council Office!

Please note that the National Council raised the membership fee to $15, effective January 1, 2010.  Don’t forget about the $1 mandatory insurance fee for each paid adult and youth.  Recharter packets for your Unit will be distributed during the month of November.

2010 Centennial Quality Unit Awards

Remember, your unit does not have to wait to submit your 2010 Centennial Quality Unit Award forms with your recharters!  Information about the Centennial Quality Unit Award program, and a link to the form, can be found at The application for the 2010 award can be forwarded to the Council Service Center anytime after October 31st, but must be received by December 31st, for consideration.

Now is the time to be thinking about which of our fellow volunteer Scouters to honor with this year’s District Award of Merit, and the Council Silver Beaver Award.  These two honors are the highest awards that our District and our Council can bestow upon on our fellow Scouters, for service to youth.  Please take a moment and go here:

Adult Leader Roundtable

Roundtable training is an important asset to any leader or parent!  Come learn and share ideas with your peers in the district. This is a monthly get-together of all leaders, Assistants, Committee Members, and involved parents. Leaders who want to help their Unit Committee get the best resources, activities, and up to date information on upcoming events in the district and council.

Roundtable also enables and motivates leaders to deliver an outstanding program to

their units. The district believes strongly that all of Quanah Parker’s leaders should start participating in roundtable in order to deliver a stronger program for our scouts.


Every Scout Deserves a Trained Adult Leader! Very soon any unit that does not have trained adult leaders will not be able to recharter. When you are trained it makes it a lot easier for you to get involved and do things right; and the boys get a better program and a better experience. Therefore this 2010, the Golden Spread Council’s goal is to have 100% leaders trained in all districts. If your unit has changed Cubmaster or Scoutmaster, or has new parents involved in it; they should get training right away! All the necessary training is online at If you need your Scouting ID in order to log in, please feel free to contact the Scout Office at (806) 358-6500 and ask any of the staff. Also, there will be additional training during the year so pay attention for dates and sign up. If for some reason you and your leaders cannot come to training, call Katie Loyall at 806-220-9693 and let her know. Katie along with the QP Unit Commissioners will come to you and train everybody. Don’t let this drag for too long, get TRAINED!!

District Executive

Let’s have fun with our boys.  I encourage our leaders to create exciting programs for their boys! We face a lot of competition, and we are limited in time to make an impact on the life of the boys in our community. All of our district leaders agree that program is the key that would allow you to engage the boys and keep them involved in scouting. We will plan something exciting for our Cub Scouts this December, and we would like to have all of our packs participate! Take advantage of the training our leaders are providing! Many of us had asked for proper training opportunities and now they are here every month (remember that training is also available online). If you want to get trained, now you have the opportunity, there are no excuses.  Special Thanks to our District Committee leaders that helped to organize our meet and greet for Andy Price (Scout Executive). Also, let us thank Charles Ritchie for allowing us to meet at the Kiva. We appreciate our volunteers and different troops that volunteered to help at Spookore. Thanks to Kent and Trina Simnacher, Lynn and Diane Gross and Michael Wright for helping the Quanah Parker District with the United Way Campaign in Moore County.  Thanks to them, we were able to successfully help the United Way of Moore County with their fundraising goal.

Popcorn Pickup will be Saturday November 6th at the same place it has always been.  Lee’s Feed and Seed on Noel Street in Memphis.  You may start arriving at 9:00 am we will be there till about 11:00 pm.  Please don’t make us wait for you.  If your unit would like to help sort the popcorn show up at 8:00am. 

New Scout Executive

Our Council is excited about our new Scout Executive Andy Price.  He has already spoken of good things he plans to do for the Golden Spread Council and the Santa Fe District.  Please join me in meeting and greeting with him on November 16th at 6:30 pm at the Methodist Church at 121 N 8th in Memphis.  Keep in mind this will not be a gripe session only to welcome and visit with Andy.


Another PERFECT Spook-O-Ree goes well at MKB.  We had about 163 youth, 100 adults, 66 troop members helping and an uncounted amount of siblings.  A total of over 300 people at the camp.  Thanks to all the Troops in SF and AW District that help make it a Success.


Every school in Santa Fe has done some kind of recruitment for Cub Scouts.  Some are starting on Round 2!  If you have not started on Round 2 of recruitment please let me know.  I will get flyers printed stating its not too late to join, with your next meeting date.  It’s that simple.

We are behind membership about 30 boys; please help me recruit these little guys.

We are also prepared to do middle school boy talks for your Scout Troop.  I would like to try that in every school also.

Youth Protection Training BSA Policy Change

To increase awareness of this societal problem and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exists today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its Youth Protection policies.

Effective June 1, 2010, the following YPT policy took affect:

1.  YPT is required for all registered leaders.

2.  New Leaders are required to take YPT before they submit their application for registration.  The certificate of completion  must be submitted at the time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.

3.  YPT must be taken every two years.  If a volunteer’s YPT record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteers will not be registered.

To ensure these policies are fully implemented, please take the following steps:

* If you have not taken YPT within the last two years, log on to and take the training.  You will need your membership number located on your BSA Membership Card.  Call the Scout office if you don’t have it.

*If you have taken YPT on-line but did not input your membership number, log back on to the Training section of and input your member ID so the training will be linked with your records.

*  If you have taken YPT within the past two years but did not take it online, log in to to ensure your records are up to date, or contact the Scout Office and have us verify that your YPT records are accurate.

*  Finally, please share this information with all of your registered adults.

Are you a Trained Leader? 

The BSA has mandated that each Council has 100 percent of its Top Leaders~~ Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, and Venture Crew Leader~~ fully trained.  We will be offering many training opportunities to get you trained and all those dates are on the Council Calendar and on the Training page on our web site.  What we have found however, is that many leaders do not have the basic training which includes Youth Protection (good for two years only), Fast Start, and This is Scouting all which can be done on-line in the comfort of your home.  All you need is your BSA membership Card (you will need the ID number) and a computer with Internet.  If you know someone who needs the training and doesn’t have a computer or internet access, let them know we have set up a computer at the Scout Office to be used by any volunteer who needs to take on-line course.  If you can’t locate your card, please call the office at 806-358-6500 and Stephen can give you your ID number.  Please take care of your training requirements now.  Remember that “Every Boy Deserves a Trained Leader”-are you a Trained Leader?

Cub Scout Lock-In

The Golden Spread Council is proud to announce that the District’s will be hosting a Cub Scout Lock-in in your area in December!  Think of this as a Parent’s Night out!  Drop off your Cub Scout at a secure location to have lots of fun (games, movieis etc) and food.  You then have time to go shopping, go to a Holiday Party or just take a break from it all!  The cost will be very competitive (less than babysitting!)  We will be posting the information and  registration flyer within this week on our web page and we will send it out to you via Constant Contact.  This is a great opportunity for your Cub Scout and parents/guardians!!!!!

2010 Silver Beaver Nominations are now being accepted.  The Silver Beaver Award is a national award presented to Scouters for noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth in the Council.  Nominations for the 2010 Silver Beaver Award are due December 1, 2010. Interactive BSA Uniforms Site Launched

The new, official uniforms website is now active. It includes a number of features that make it a valuable resource not only for Scouts and parents, but for leaders, Scout Shops, councils, distributors, and customer service. The interactive format takes visitors through Scouting’s ranks and programs, with 360-degree views of what the official uniform should look like when complete. Other features include drag-and-drop insignia, full descriptions of each uniform piece, and a “Shop Now” link that takes you directly to the site.

Brush Up on Your Driving Skills While Helping the BSA

New Training Will Be Offered for Venturing Leaders

The Venturing Leadership Skills Course (VLSC) is being replaced by a new course entitled Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews, or ILSC. The purpose of ILSC, which is the first course in the series of Venturing leadership training, is to teach crew members with leadership positions what their new responsibility is and how to most effectively reach success in that role. Completion of the course is a prerequisite for participation in more advanced leadership programs. The Volunteer Development Team expects this course to be released to the Scouting community within 30 days. Watch the training page on for updates.

Groundbreaking at The Summit Marks New Era for BSA

Scouts, volunteers, and BSA professionals joined with area officials in West Virginia last week at the groundbreaking ceremony for our newest high-adventure base and future home of the national jamboree—The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. Unique Scout Service Hour Project

“Wreaths Across America” is a nationwide project that is being spearheaded locally by the Civil Air Patrol and Llano Cemetary.  There are several hundred wreaths to be laid on veterans gravesites at the Llano Cemetary on November 11, 2010 at 11am.

Seven members arrived at The Oaks between 7:45 and 8 AM and got right to work pulling bags full of clothes out of a sorting room.  The clothes were sorted into two piles, one for men’s clothing and one for everything else.  All the non men’s clothing were re-bagged and loaded into the back of Bob Post’s truck to be hauled off to other clothing banks. According to Bob, “women and children usually have clothes but men arrive with just the clothes on their back.” The arrowmen’s next task was to reorganized a basement storeroom for the men’s clothes. When that task was completed, plywood was carried into the basement for a future project. As the boys worked, there were homeless people coming and going. At the completion of the work everyone enjoyed pizza at Pizza Hut. Members present were Taos A, Caleb H, Nate H, Zach B, Blake S, Bob Past, and Audrey House.

NESA Eagle Scout Scholorship

The applications for the 2011 NESA Eagle Scout scholarships are now available at The homepage features a blue, clickable banner that leads directly to the forms. 

These are the only scholarship applications acceptable in 2011. These applications must be printed and mailed to the national office, postmarked no later than midnight on January 31, 2011

Philmont Opportunities

To some the fall is the most beautiful time of the year at Philmont. Don’t be a stranger, for just $40/day, come witness the golden aspens, wildlife and excellent Philmont terrain on an Autumn Adventure trek! We welcome traditional youth groups as well as all adult groups.

In just a few months Philmont will complete it’s annual transformation into a pristine winter wonderland. Winter brings a wide range of exciting activities to the Ranch. Campmaster Training Now On-Line 

Are you interested in spending a weekend at Camp Don and staying in the new Campmaster Building?  If so, why not join the Campmaster Corps.  Duties including checking in units, making sure they are settled in their campsites, giving advice on how to properly use our equipment and facilities and checking them out upon departure.  This is a great opportunity to help units grow in the camping program and enjoy a weekend at camp.   Training is now on-line!.  Go to the link below, take the training and then call the Ranger to set up a date and time so he can show you where the utilities connections are at Camp and all the other things you need to know.  Once that is completed, we will add you to the list of Campmaster!  We are desperate for more Campmasters- please contact Scott ASAP to discuss this great opportunity!!

2011 Merit Badge University

Although several months away, planning has already begun for the 2011 MBU.  We know it will be held on January 22nd, 2011 and we know it will be held at WT A & M University in Canyon, Texas.  Mark your calendars for this date and start talking about it with your Scouts.  More information will be made available in mid November!
