Popcorn 2013

Adobe Walls did very well in popcorn on the first sale.  We should see about a 10% increase after the secondary sale ends.  Please remember to pick up your orders this Friday at the A&T Yard Service located on south Hwy 70 in Pampa.  Thank you for your effort to help us with a great 2013 popcorn sale!

Monthly Newsletter Submissions

We will be holding 2 recharter workshops in the Adobe Walls district in the next few weeks.   Remember that your units need to attend one of these as a requirement to get free rank advancement in 2014.  This is a great time to get all your leaders youth protection certified at one time and to network with other unit leaders.

The dates, times, and locations are as followed:

Tuesday, November 12 from 6pm to 9pm in Borger

St. Johns Church (in the gym) located at 201 St. Johns Road

Youth protection will be taught at 730 pm

Saturday, November 16 from 9am to noon in Pampa

Pampa Chamber of Commerce located at 200 N. Ballard (in the MK Brown Room)

Youth protection will be taught at 1030 am

Each unit needs to pick-up their recharter packet at one of the workshops.

Holidays approaching

As the end of year holidays are getting closer I encourage everyone to keep posted on spring activities on the council website.  STAY active for those boys that are thirsty for activities.  People will be traveling and we pray for everyone’s safety and happiness.  Thank you all for everything you do to grow this movement.

November Recharter Workshop– NEW!

Unit Leaders

Please mark you calendars now and “save the date” for Thursday, November 7th 2013 for the annual Recharter Workshop taking place at the monthly Roundtable meeting, 7:00pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

Every year ALL registered Scouters renew their annual membership through a process known as “Rechartering”. As our membership is only valid for 1 calendar year at a time (1/1 – 12/31), we must renew each year and this process is vital in keeping your pack/troop/team/crew/ship/post active and eligible to continue operations.

We will discuss the finer points of the recharting process at this workshop and your attendance is necessary in order to receive the information and your re-chartering materials packet. Please contact your District Executive with any questions.

Friends of Scouting

2014 is around the corner and as proactive Scouts we are already looking and planning into the 2014 year. While 2013 has been very successful pertaining to fundraising it only helps us one year at a time. In order to provide awesome summer program and other Council activities we need to start securing the funds to continue operations for the 2014 year. Your Unit (pack/troop) plays a vital role in the success of our council. Through Family Enrollment presentations conducted your Blue&Gold’s and Courts of Honor, our council is able to allocate those desperately needed resources which are critical to our council’s survival. We can’t do it without your help. As you complete your annual planning and Unit Annual Calendar, be sure to include when you will hold these recognition events and share those dates with your District Executive so that presentations can be scheduled. The Family Enrollment presentation is quick, less than 5 minutes long and will not take away from magic that our youth experience through the joy of recognition for their accomplishments.

In order to keep Scouting alive and well, your help is needed to get your units (pack/troop) Family Friends of Scouting presentation scheduled and completed. Thank you in advance for your attention to this very important aspect of Scouting.

This monthly meeting provides a platform for discussion, event planning, training, networking and idea sharing that EVERYONE will surely benefit from. We feature monthly Boy Scout cub Cub Scout -related topics & fun-filled activities in a warm & welcoming environment!

Dalhart Eagle Scouts

On October 13th, 2013, at the Rita Blanca Coliseum in Dalhart, TX, Boy Scouts were celebrated at their Eagle Court of Honor. Congratulations to those young men who have achieved something so tremendous!

Recharter Workshops

Lone Wolf District will be offering three separate occasions during which you can attend a recharter workshop. Any parent, leader, or volunteer can attend. We will answer any questions you might have and help with the process. And, as an added bonus, your units will benefit from a very generous donation made to our council to help fund some of our advancements. I look forward to seeing each and every one of my units at a recharter workshop! These are very important to attend.

Lone Wolf District Awards Banquet

Come out to Spearman , TX, for a night of great steaks, presentation of awards, and fellowship at the Lone Wolf District Awards Banquet on November 16th, 2013, at 6:00 p.m. If you have anyone who should be nominated for an award, please contact Jim Lear. 2nd Annual Lone Wolf Cub Scout Shootout

On November 23rd, 2013, we will be holding the 2nd annual Lone Wolf Cub Scout Shootout at the Perryton Rifle and Pistol Range in Perryton, TX. Bring your cub scouts to have fun, earn your archery and bb gun belt loops, and meet other scouts from across the district! It will be a great and fun day! Mack Dick Dining Hall Dedication Ceremony  NEW

Recharter Workshop NEW

All Districts wil be conducting Recharter Workshops in the next two weeks.  This replaces the monthly Roundtable Training’s in most Districts.  You can locate your area Workshop date by visiting www.goldenspread.org and clicking on Calandar.  If you have any questions or can’t locate the nearest location to you, please call the Scout Office at 806-358-6500 or your District Executive.  As a reminder, at least one adult member from your unit must attend to pickup your recharter packet, receive training on how to complete it, and to receive FREE Rank advancments begining in January 2014.  It’s vital that someone from your unit attends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Membership Fee Increase

At a meeting of top Scouting executives in Washington D.C. it was announced that the National registration fee will be increased to $24 annually starting 1/1/2014. This fee impacts all units rechartering 1/1/2014With the additional $1.00 Insurance fee, the total cost will be $25.00 and that must be collected from each rechartering member.

With this information, you should adjust your unit’s budget accordingly.

  • The Golden Spread Council passes 100% of the registration fee to the National Council, Boy Scouts of America.

This one day adult training will be held on December 7 at Polk Street United Methodist Church in Amarillo.  Lots of exciting and innovative classes are conducted by volunteers for volunteers.  Make you Scouting life easier by learning how to effectively conduct meetings, how to plan a Blue and Gold Banquet, how to deal with challenging Scouts, how to cook some outstanding meals and cobblers at your next Pack campout. Office Hours for the Holidays  NEW

The Scout Office will be closed on November 27-December 1,  December 24-25, December 31- January 1, 2014. The Scout Shop will be closed for inventory on January 2-3, 2014

Uniform Shirt to be Tucked in  NEW

Effective Oct. 1, 2013, the official stance on the Boy Scouts of America’s uniform policy is that shirts are to be worn tucked in, regardless of whether the wearer is a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturer, or adult Scouter. All Sea Scout uniforms are designed to be tucked in except youth dress whites and youth dress blues.

In the past, guidelines have simply stated the uniform wearer should be neat in appearance. Neatness includes tucking in the shirt. This clarification will appear in related resources, such as the uniform inspection sheets, as they are revised and printed.

Wood Badge Training Course

We, along with the South Plains Council (Lubbock) will be hosting Wood Badge.  This adult training is for all Adults Leaders (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturing).  Wood Badge is advanced training that will help you not only develop and be the best you can in Scouting but in your personal life as well.  Check out the link below for all the information.

Eagle Scout Scholarships 

Being an Eagle Scout pays off, in some cases literally. The National Eagle Scout Association offers scholarships for Eagles entering college, a big help for families as tuitions continue to rise at universities nationwide. Graduating high schoolers can apply for 2014 NESA Scholarship beginning Oct. 1, 2013, with a submission deadline of Dec. 31, 2013.

If you judge the Scoutmaster Handbook by its cover, you might assume it’s solely meant for, well, Scoutmasters. Assistant Scoutmasters, it seemed, were to look elsewhere for Scouting wisdom. That’s about to change. Later this year, the two-volume Troop Leader Guidebook will debut, replacing the Scoutmaster Handbook and offering helpful checklists, quick tips and fresh ideas for both new troop leaders and veteran Scouters.

High Plains Eagle Scout Association Scholorship  NEW

The High Plains Eagle Scout Association Scholorhsip Form is now avaialbe to be completed.  The form must be completed by November 29 and received at the Socut Office by December 9.

Silver Beaver Award Nominations   NEW

The Silver Beaver Award is the highest form of recognition that a local council can bestow upon a volunteer. It is made for noteworthy service of exceptional character to boyhood by registered Scouters within the jurisdiction of the Golden Spread Council. The Silver Beaver Award is the council-level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America. Recipients of this award are registered adult leaders who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council.  Nominations are due to the Council NLT December 15, 2013.  Please click on the link for the Nomination Form.

Council Annual Business Meeting/Nominations  NEW

Our Golden Spread Council Annual Meeting will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014. 

It starts at 7:00 am at the Scout Office (401 Tascosa Rd., Amarillo TX 79124).

Chartered Organization Representatives are official voting members of the Council and are invited to attend and represent their Chartered Organization.

The Council Annual Meeting is important in determining the future and direction of the Council.

One of the purposes of the Council Annual Meeting is to elect:

  1. Council members at large
  2. Associate and honorary members
  3. Executive board members and advisory council members
  4. Council officers (except Scout executive) and local council representatives to the National Council

Volunteers may suggest candidates to our nominating committee for the positions listed above.  The members of the Council’s nominating committee are:  Puff Niegos (Chairman), Clint Averitte, Paul Harpole, Bill McCarty, Brian Bruckner, and David Prescott.  Nominations must be received in writing.

National President-Elect Named  NEW

The BSA National Executive Board has elected former Secretary of Defense and former CIA Director Dr. Robert M. Gates to the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America. Dr. Gates will serve as a member of the board’s executive committee and as the national president-elect. Gates’ appointment was made upon the recommendation of national volunteer and professional leaders including the BSA national nominating committee.

Upon approval of voting members of the National Council, Dr. Gates will begin a two-year term as the BSA national president in May 2014. Following the National Council’s approval of Dr. Gates’ two-year term as the BSA national president beginning in May 2014, Randall Stephenson, chairman and chief executive officer of AT&T Inc., has agreed to serve as the president-elect of the BSA.

Dr. Gates is a past member of the National Executive Board, past president of the National Eagle Scout Association, a distinguished Eagle Scout, and recipient of the Silver Buffalo Award.

Cooking Merit Badge  NEW

Significant changes are coming to the Cooking merit badge. First, this badge will become Eagle-required beginning Jan. 1, 2014. In addition, there will be a major overhaul to the requirements, which will take effect Jan. 1, 2015.

The addition of the Cooking merit badge to the Eagle-required list means that, regardless of when a Scout earned the Life rank or began working on the Eagle Scout rank, he must earn the Cooking merit badge to become an Eagle Scout (unless he fulfills all the requirements, except his board of review, before Jan. 1, 2014).

As for the changes to the requirements, they’ll appear in a revised merit badge pamphlet that will be released during 2013. The new requirements then become effective Jan. 1, 2015, with the release of Boy Scout Requirements, No. 34765.

Scouts who have already earned the Cooking merit badge are not required to re-earn the badge under the new requirements in order to qualify for the Eagle Scout Award.

Cinematography Merit Badge now called Moviemaking  NEW

Lights, camera, action! The Cinematography merit badge has been renamed Moviemaking. The change was made to reflect the many elements that go into creating a movie.

Aside from some minor updates from the Merit Badge Maintenance Task Force, the requirements and content for the merit badge are essentially the same. Also unchanged is the actual award emblem.

Regardless of its name, a Scout may only earn and get credit for one or the other. Also, the name change does not affect Scouts who have previously completed or who are currently working on the Cinematography merit badge.

The pamphlet bearing the new name is scheduled for delivery to local councils in late November 2013, and the change will be reflected in the 2014 Boy Scout Requirements book.

2014 Merit Badge University  NEW

The 2014 MBU is scheduled for Janaury 25 at WT A&M University in Canyon, Texas.  The registration and all details will be out soon.  Watch the Council Website!!!
