A message from your District Commissioner

We would like to extend an invitation to all Adobe Walls Unit Commissioners, and anyone interested in becoming a Unit Commissioner, to attend the Adobe Wall Commissioner’s Roundtable to be held at the M.K. Brown Room, Pampa Chamber of Commerce on October 20, 2011 at 6:00 PM. We will answer all your questions about being a Unit Commissioner, talk about the additional need for Unit Commissioners in Adobe Walls District and Council Commissioner Rob Law will provide a fast paced session on what we can do right now to improve our support of Adobe Walls Scout Units. Please Contact Rick Jones, District Commissioner if you have any questions.

After two months on the job……

Hello Adobe Walls! What a ride my first two months have been. With both popcorn, recruitment in full swing, I can say that busy is the word. I have met most of the units and look forward to meeting everyone else soon.

I need every unit to email me an updated leadership roster with contact and email information.  I realize that over the summer and into a new school year that roles change with most units. We need to make sure we have people in place to take the reins so the pack / troop do not lose momentum. It takes parents to make this work and without them, we will be doing the boys of Adobe Walls a huge disservice.

Finally, I want to invite everyone to attend the first district round table on October 20, 2011 at 7pm. It will follow the Commissioner’s Roundtable at 6pm. Both meetings will be at the MK Brown room at the Pampa Chamber of Commerce located at 200 N. Ballard inPampa. I would like to see all Adobe Walls units represented that evening and all parents are welcome as well. I look forward to meeting everyone that evening.

School Recruitment

Fall recruitment is going great!  Adobe Walls has welcomed 195 new scouts during the month of September and we still have a few to go. Let’s get our units active and fill in the needed leadership rolls within the units. It takes the parents to make it successful. We are doing a great job so far. Let’s grow our district and lead a new generation of boys into scouting. For more information, please contact Eric Byrne at 806-584-8045 or by email.  If you know of a potential cub scout or adult leader please let me know.

Roundtable Leader meetings

There will be no Roundtable adult leaders meetings, in October.  The next scheduled meetings will be in December.

BALOO Training

Want to take you Cub Pack camping?   If you do, the Pack needs to have BALOO trained leaders.  The trained leaders must accompany the Pack on any camping trips.

BALOO training is being offered on Saturday, October 8, 2011, inGoodwell,Oklahoma.  Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., training starts at 9 a.m.  Bring a sack lunch.  Training should be over by 3 p.m.  To insure we have enough hand out materials for participants, we need to know who’s coming.  Call Steve at 580-651-2615 to sign up, and for directions to the training location.

Popcorn Sales

Our annual popcorn sales campaign underway.  Popcorn sales orders are due at the CouncilServiceCenter, in Amarillo, on Friday, October 28th, by 5:00 p.m.  Popcorn pickup day will be Saturday, November 12th, and delivery points will be in Dalhart, Perryton and Guymon, again this year.  More information, forms and excellent sales resources can be found online at: http://www.goldenspread.org/Programs/Popcorn/Popcorn.htm

Our annual, council-wide Popcorn Sale is a great way to fund your unit’s program activities for the next year!  As you well know, it costs money to operate a unit and provide your scouts with quality, fun-filled program activities.  Quality program activities make it easier to recruit new members and their parents, and help you retain the members you already have.  Trails End popcorn is a quality product with national brand recognition, and outstanding promotional materials and recognition items.  It is the ‘gold standard’ for fund raising projects for Cubs, Boy Scouts and Venturers.  Please join us in this year’s sale; It’s simple, It’s fun and It’s profitable.

Roundups – School Night for Scouting

Our District’s recruiting efforts for this year are still underway.  As you continue to sign up new scouts we need to make every effort to get their applications turned in quickly.  Recharter time is rapidly approaching and we want all the new boys & leaders entered into ScoutNet, before we do the production run of the recharter packets.  One of the benefits to you is that you won’t have to enter the new recruits yourself, during the online recharter process.

Unit Recharters

Unit recharter time is almost upon us.  All of our unit charters expire on December 31, 2011.  We need to have the rechartering process completed by December 1, 2011.  This allows our Council staff adequate time to correct any errors, or help you with online procedural questions.  We are utilizing online rechartering again this year.  This is our seventh year to do a portion of the recharter via the Internet.

What does your unit need to be doing to get ready?

  • Complete any applications for any new Scouts, or leaders, and submit them, along with the required registration and Boy’s Life fees, to the Council Office, now.  This will save you from having to manually enter new members and leaders during online rechartering.
  • All applications for membership need to be complete: all birthdays, Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers filled in, all signature blocks signed (this includes unit Committee Chair and Chartered Organization Head or Representative’s approval signatures for all adults, and Authorization for Background Check) and application dates.
  • Recruit/designate one adult leader from your unit to complete the online recharter portion of the process.
  • Remember, rechartering is not complete until all paperwork and fees have been received by the Council Office!

Please remember that the National Council registration fee is $15.  Don’t forget to add the $1 mandatory insurance fee for each paid adult and youth.  Recharter packets for your Unit will be distributed during the month of November.

These meals are excellent as training tools for any group.  The meals are shelf stable and can be used for any outdoor activity where you are going to be away from cooking facilities for a period of time.

Each meal will feed two campers a breakfast, lunch or supper.

If you will need meals in the spring for training hikes or other outdoor activities I encourage you to order now.  I do not expect to have any meals for shipping in the spring of 2012.

Your trail meal order will be shipped within 5 business days from the time your order is received.

Journey to Excellence

What can   bring to units? Measurement, guidance, recognition, and more:

1. A framework for planning the year

  • The Journey to Excellence standards are based on what successful units do to continually improve.
  • If your unit plans to achieve gold or silver, you’ll have a strong and active program.

2. A method for evaluating your unit

  • Journey to Excellence provides tangible measurements based on information you are likely already tracking, such as how many campouts you have and how many youth are advancing, and the software uses simple ways to calculate your performance.

3. Guidance in areas where you might do better

  • As you track your performance against the Journey to Excellence standards, you can easily see where you could do better.

4. Specific guidelines and standards of what is considered good performance

  • Journey to Excellence has specific, simple measures that help you compare what you are doing against the standards.

5. Early warning of potential problem areas

  • You are able track any areas where your unit is not performing as you might like and have plenty of time to make corrections.

6. Recognition for good Scouting

  • You can proudly receive your bronze, silver, or gold recognition for your Scouting unit for the year.

7. Benchmarking to get ideas and tips from other good units

  • You can receive help and best practices in areas where other units have met the gold standard.
  • In the areas where you are doing well, you can give help and ideas to other units.
