Camp Staff Needed 

We are still in need of a few youth camp staff.    Applicants must be 15 years old or older and be willing to commit from June 13 through July 3.  We offer paid positions, tent housing, great meals, and the opportunity to have a lot of fun.  positions available are 2 General Instructors, 2 Waterfront Instructors, 1 Polaris Director (over 18 years of age), and 2 Dining Hall Staff.  We have new Camp leadership this year who have lots of great things planned for the staff.  Applications can be found at the link below.

Youth Protection Training BSA Policy Change

To increase awareness of this societal problem and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exists today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its Youth Protection policies.

Effective June 1, 2010, the following YPT policy will take affect:

1.  YPT is required for all registered leaders.

2.  New Leaders are required to take YPT before they submit their application for registration.  The certificate of completion  must be submitted at the time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.

3.  YPT must be taken every two years.  If a volunteer’s YPT record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteers will not be registered.

To ensure these policies are fully implemented, please take the following steps:

* If you have not taken YPT within the last two years, log on to www.myscouting.org and take the training.  You will need your membership number located on your BSA Membership Card.  Call the Scout office if you don’t have it.

*If you have taken YPT on-line but did not input your membership number, log back on to the Training section of www.myscouting.org and input your member ID so the training will be linked with your records.

*  If you have taken YPT within the past two years but did not take it online, log in to www.myscouting.org to ensure your records are up to date, or contact the Scout Office and have us verify that your YPT records are accurate.

*  Finally, please share this information with all of your registered adults.

Are you a Trained Leader? 

The BSA has mandated that each Council has 100 percent of its Top Leaders~~ Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, and Venture Crew Leader~~ fully trained this year.  We will be offering many training opportunities to get you trained and once the 2010-2011 calendar is published in August, you will see even more training opportunities.  What we have found however, is that many leaders do not have the basic training which includes Youth Protection (good for two years only), Fast Start, and This is Scouting all which can be done on-line in the comfort of your home.  All you need is your BSA membership Card (you will need the ID number) and a computer with Internet.  If you know someone who needs the training and doesn’t have a computer or internet access, let them know we have set up a computer at the Scout Office to be used by any volunteer who needs to take on-line course.  If you can’t locate your card, please call the office at 806-358-6500 and Stephen can give you your ID number.  Please take care of your training requirements now.  Remember that “Every Boy Deserves a Trained Leader”-are you a Trained Leader?

Junior Boy Scout Staff Needed 

Do any of your Boy Scouts need service hours?  If so, the Camp Don Day Camp could use you!  The Camp Director would like several Boy Scouts to help staff the Day Camp on June 14-16 from 9am to 4pm or any part of those days.  You will receive a Camp Tshirt, Patch, and lunch for the day(s) you are helping.  The pay is the satisfaction that you are providing enjoyment to young scouts!  For information, have the Scout contact Scott at 806-358-6500 no later the June 7. 

Does your Troop Members Need Service Hours? 

We are looking for any Troop who would like to spend a few hours on a Saturday cleaning up, cutting  grass, weedeating,  and performing general outside type maintenance at the Scout Service Center.  If you are interested, please contact Stephen Keel at 806-358-6500

Craig Retirement Community Parade

If your Scouts are interested in marching in a parade, the Craig Retirement Community located at 5500 W. 9th Street in Amarillo is organizing one.  If you are interested, be there at 6pm on June 17 (in uniform of course).  Call Rhonda at 468-1102 for more information.

Amarillo Venom Indoor Football Scout Night

The Venom are offering all Scouts one more opportunity to attend a game.  Tickets cost $10.00 and can be purchased by calling Robbie Russ at 806-350-7277.  The game is on June 12th.

Philmont Training Center 

The Philmont Training Center is nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northeastern New Mexico near Cimarron on the grounds of Philmont Scout Ranch.  More then 70 week-long courses are conducted each summer for unit, district and council volunteers.  A special feature of the Training Center is that families are invited and encouraged to share in the experience.  A staff is available to lead family members of all ages through a variety of activities that include horse rides, hikes, crafts, games, nature walks, archery, and much more.  

The Philmont Training Center has a course for every Scouter who is interested in learning how to provide a better, stronger Scouting program.  To register, go to www.myscouting.org and register under the Events Reservation Tab or call 575-376-2281 or visit them at www.PhilmontTrainingCenter.org 

Shooting Sports Camp 

Shooting Sports Camp will expose Scouts to Shooting Sports disciplines and activities in the areas of Archery, Rifle, 5-Stand, Trap, and Action Archery. Friday and  Saturday evening will be packed with Shooting Sports related demonstrations and exhibits. The NRA has generously provided some of our camp materials. 

This camp is open to all registered Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts and will be held on Friday, July 9, 2010 through Sunday, July 11, 2010. Check-in between 3p.m. and 5p.m. – Camp Don Harrington is located 12 miles south of Amarillo, TX on South Washington Street. 

 The cost is $95.00 for Scouts and $85.00 for adults that register before Friday, June 18th, 2010.  After that date, the fees go to $105.00 for Scouts and $90.00 for adults.  

Camp Fees will include use of camp, archery equipment, guns, all necessary ammunition and targets, instruction by trained staff, and various recognition items. Meals include a Friday Evening dinner, Saturday’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and Sunday’s breakfast and lunch.  Dinner on Friday will begin at 5pm along with camp orientation and safety briefings.  More information can be found at the links below.

Council Program Kickoff and School Night Orientation

This awesome and very important event is scheduled for August 14, 2010.  The location has not been finalized but the date should be put in your busy schedule.  All units should attend!.  This event will showcase our entire council calendar for 2010-2011 PLUS we will provide everything you need to have a succesful School Night once we begin our recruiting schedule.  Again, please put this date on your calendar and we will have more information in July and August.

Eighth Annual Sporting Clays Classic 

It is hard to believe but it is now time to start preparing for the Golden Spread Council’s Sporting Clays Classic tournament and auction.  This year’s tournament will be our Eighth Annual Sporting Clays Classic.  This year’s Classic will be held on Friday, August 20 and Saturday, August 21. Our tournament has grown from 24 teams in 2003, to this year’s projected 50 teams and over 200 shooters.  These teams will come from Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Colorado all in support of Scouting.  As you know, all proceeds from the tournament go towards supporting our local Boy Scout programs

With this many teams and shooters, we are in need of 150+ volunteers to help us run a fun and safe tournament. This letter is a request to you and to members of your troop or crew to consider volunteering some time to help us during this year’s Sporting Clays Tournament.  We respectfully ask that all volunteers be 13 years old or older (or be accompanied by an Adult) due to nature of this tournament.  

Volunteers are needed in lots of different areas and for various times. Volunteers will be needed on both Friday, August 20 and on Saturday, August 21.  As a volunteer, you can help on one or both days.  You can also specify to work mornings or afternoons or all day.  Every volunteer will receive a t-shirt as recognition for their time and help. 

Scout Leaders please share this information with your fellow leaders, Scout parents and with your troop and crew members.

Flag Retirement Ceremony 

A Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held at Lake Meredith Amphitheater on August 28 2010 @ 7pm.  On Saturday August 28, 2010 at 7pm, Borger Boy Scout Troops 560 and 507 will be holding a public flag retirement ceremony at Lake Meredith Amphitheater (adjacent to the Fritch Fortress camping area).  The ceremony is free and all are welcome to attend.  Any scouts wishing to help retire flags are welcome, please come about a half hour early for instructions. 

The ceremony will last about one hour, and we have about 200 flags left over from last year’s ceremony.  No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.  The grommets that are left after retiring the flags will be saved as tokens of remembrance.  

If you have flags that you would like to have us retire, please arrange a drop off by calling James Farrer at 806-553-5859.  If you would like to have a flag retired in honor of someone who has served in the armed forces please contact James Farrer.  If you are a life scout and would like to organize the ceremony for your Eagle project, please contact James Farrer.   If you need further directions to Lake Meredith Amphitheater, please contact them at 806-857-3151 

Northern Tier National High Adventure Program 

If your Boy Scout Troop or Venture Crew is interested in going to the Northern Tier High Adventure Base in 2011, give Scott a call at 806-358-6500 to get the information you will need to make a reservation.  Reservations begin April 1, 2010 and are first come, first serve. 

Health and Safety Support Committee Confirms BSA Policy on Physical Exams 

The BSA’s Health and Safety Support Committee, which is composed of volunteers in the health and safety field across the country, thoroughly reviewed the BSA’s policies requiring physical examinations to be completed and signed by a certified and licensed health-care provider-a physician (MD, DO), nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant. This included a review of material provided by various individuals and organizations representing the chiropractic community. 

The committee determined the current requirements remain the best policy for the BSA, based on the fact that chiropractors are not certified to treat all of the identified high-risk factors included in the BSA’s activities (available at www.scouting.org, under “Scouting Safely“) and are not regulated universally across the United States. 

Simply stated, physicians (MD, DO), nurse practitioners, and physician’s assistants will be the only health-care providers to perform physical for the Boy Scouts of America. 

Campmaster Training Now On-Line 

Are you interested in spending a weekend at Camp Don and staying in the new Campmaster Building?  If so, why not join the Campmaster Corps.  Duties including checking in units, making sure they are settled in their campsites, giving advice on how to properly use our equipment and facilities and checking them out upon departure.  This is a great opportunity to help units grow in the camping program and enjoy a weekend at camp.  The Campmaster building is ready for you to enjoy.  Central air and heat, full kitchen and bath plus two bedrooms and a living room await you!  Training is now on-line!.  Go to the link below, take the training and then call the Ranger to set up a date and time so he can show you where the utilities connections are at Camp and all the other things you need to know.  Once that is completed, we will add you to the list of Campmaster!

Merit Badge Counselor Registration 

If you are a current registered Merit Badge Counselor, you must recertify every year.  It’s a simple process but must be done now.  Please click on the link below, complete and print the forms and send it to the office.  If you wish to be a Merit Badge Counselor, you must complete an Adult Registration Form and the form linked below.  There is no charge to be a Counselor.

Venturing Program Changes 

The National Executive Board recently approved a resolution to change the eligibility requirements for Venturing to ensure consistency among Venturing, high-adventure bases, and other core programs. 

The current age and grade eligibility requirement for participation in the Venturing program is 14 years of age and completion of the eighth grade. 

Effective May 1, 2010, the minimum age requirement will be changed to 14 years of age, or 13 years of age and completion of the eighth grade. The maximum age for participation remains under 21 years of age.

Kwahadis Shows 

The Kwahadis will perform Song of the Eagle at the Kwahadi Kiva on May 28, 29, 30, June 4, 5, 6*, 18, 19, 25, 22, July 2, 9, 10, 11*, 16, 17, 2010 (Sunday 3 pm matinees).  Over 2500 Scouts spent the night in the Kiva last summer.  We will schedule additional shows on evenings when we have enough visiting Scouts or tour bus groups.   Lodging, meals, performances, and museum are available. 

Philmont Shows 

The Kwahadis will perform at the Philmont Training Center at 7:00 pm for hundreds of Scouters of all over America on June 14, 21, July 12, and July 19.  This will be the 25th year of Kwahadi shows at Philmont! 

The Kwahadi program began in Troop 9 in the fall of 1944.  Since that time over 1600 boys and girls have presented over 4000 performances in 48 states and overseas.  As the 65th Anniversary year began in the fall of 2008, 25 Kwahadis represented North America and performed with the Korean National Ballet in the opening ceremony of the International Xtreme Games in Busan, S. Korea.  Afterwards the group present five shows in various venues around the city during their 10 day visit, and enjoyed site-seeing and the fine hospitality of the Korean hosts!
