Rescheduled Palo Duro Lake Cleanup

The annual Palo Duro Lake cleanup has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 15, 2010, near Spearman, Texas.  The River Authority is very gracious in allowing Scouts to use the lake property, for free!  This is our annual event to help pay them back for their kindness and support.  This event is a great time for our district’s units to get together, complete a worthwhile service project and enjoy the fellowship of Scouting.

Normally, troops camp out for the weekend and packs attend for the day.  Packs are welcome to camp out, as long as BSA Family Camping guidelines are followed.  This is a great way for our Cubs to get to see what the “big boys” do, in Boy Scouts.  Watch your e-mail inbox for a Constant Contact e-mail with a link to the event flyer.  This event is a great time for our district’s units to get together, complete a worthwhile service project that benefits the Palo Duro River Authority, and enjoy the fellowship of Scouting.  Please contact Richard Nowlin at rcnowlin@valornet.com, (806-658-4839) or Steve Knollenberg, stevek.bsa@gmail.com (580-651-2615) for more information.

May Leader meetings

The upcoming May Leader meetings are extremely important to you as leaders and critical to the health and success of your units.  We will be discussing all the Cub and Boy Scout summer camping activities available this summer.  This will be the last leaders meetings until next fall.  Consequently, we will also be discussing what your unit needs to be doing, by late summer, to get ready for another exciting year of Scouting!  Plan to attend; to not only learn about what’s going on in Scouting in our District, but to share your ideas and experiences so we can provide the best of the Scouting program to our kids!  The dates, times and locations of our meetings are listed in the calendar section, above.  Choose the location and date that is most convenient for you!

Cub Scout Day Camps and Cub & Webelos Resident Camps

As this school year rapidly comes to a close, now is the time to be planning to attend one of our District or Council Cub Day Camps.  Your Pack should be attending at least one of these camps.  In-district offerings include Cub day camps in Guymon & Spearman in June, and Dalhart, in July.  This year, we are offering more resident camping activities to all our Cubs and Webelos.  Look for dates and further details elsewhere in this newsletter.

Order of the Arrow Unit Elections

The Order of the Arrow Troop election window ends on May 28th, 2010.  You must conduct your election, before this date!  All Scoutmasters should be reviewing their Troop records to identify which youth members are eligible for election into the Order of the Arrow, this spring.  To be eligible, the youth needs to be at least a First Class Scout and have completed fifteen days and nights of camping in the last two calendar years, including one, but not more than one, long-term camp of 5, or 6 nights.  The remaining 9 or 10 nights must consist of overnight, weekend, or other short-term camping.  “Cabin camping”, does not count.  Chapter Unit election coordinators will be contacting each Scoutmaster, to schedule an election for Troops that have eligible candidates.  Remember, a Troop may not conduct its own election!
