Scouting for Food

Scouting for Food will be conducted on March 27, 2010 all across the Council Service area.  All you need to prepare your Scouts for this event is at the link below.  If you can’t attend your District Roundtable in March, and you are planning on participating, please contact your District Executive by March 12 to get your area.

What’s a Kid to Do?

This annual event is April 10, 2010 from 1pm to 6pm at the Westgate Mall in Amarillo.  If your Scout Unit would like to put up a display and hand out Scouting Information (we will provide) please contact Scott at 806-358-6500 no later than April 1.  In the past, we’ve had several units take a turn at manning the table and this has been done in shifts.  The table is provided for our use.  THis is a great way to do a little recruiting for your unit and to show the community how much fun Scouting is.

Centennial Spring Camporee

If excitement is what your Boy Scouts are looking for then look no further!  This Camporee will be held on April 16-18 at Camp Don Harrington.  We will also have a morning program for all Cub Scouts and Webelos so they too can get a sneak preview of what Boy Scouts do!  We will need lots of help in the areas of logistics, food prep, and scorekeeping.  If your unit is planning on attending and you are bringing lots of adults, we could use your help.  Please email or call Scott at 806-358-6500 to express your interest in helping out.  For all the information, events, and registration form, please click on the link below.

All the District Cub Scout Camp and Cub Scout Resident Camp Flyers are now available at the link below.  Start planning now for your Cub Scout Camping experience.  Instead of asking parents for the entire fee at one time, consider a payment plan starting in March. Collect your fees over the next three to four months which significantly reduces the “shock” of one payment!

Camp Staff Needed

We are getting ready for the Camping season and we need youth staff for Camp MK Brown.  Applicatants must be 15 years old or older and be willing to commit from June 13 through July 3.  We offer paid positions, tent housing, great meals, and the opportunity to have a lot of fun.  We have new Camp leadership this year wo have lots of great things planned for the staff.  Applications can be found at the link below.

Are you a Trained Leader?

The BSA has mandated that each Council has 100 percent of its Top Leaders~~ Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, and Venture Crew Leader~~ fully trained this year.  We will be offering many training opportunities to get you trained and once the 2010-2011 calendar is published in August, you will see even more training opportunities.  What we have found however, is that many leaders do not have the basic training which includes Youth Protection (good for two years only), Fast Start, and This is Scouting all which can be done on-line in the comfort of your home.  All you need is your BSA membership Card (you will need the ID number) and a computer with Internet.  If you know someone who needs the training and doesn’t have a computer or internet access, let them know we have set up a computer at the Scout Office to be used by any volunteer who needs to take on-line course.  If you can’t locate your card, please call the office at 806-358-6500 and Stephen can give you your ID number.  PLease take care of your training requirements now.  Remember that “Every Boy Deserves a Trained Leader”-are you a Trained Leader?

NYLT Information

NYLT is training for Boy Scouts to help lead your troop in to the future.  They participate in activities for an entire week at Camp Don Harrington under the guidance of trained adults.  Graduates go back to the troop with a renewed sense of committment and leadership skills.  For more information. please click on the link below.

The National Eagle Scout Association is again conducting a nationwide Eagle Scout search to benefit local councils and to give each Eagle Scout the opportunity to submit their favorite story and photo for a book. Councils will have access to a database of adult Eagle Scouts and their contact information as a result of this project, as was done last year when we found roughly half of the living Eagle Scouts.

The book, Eagle Scout Stories: Tales from the Trails of Scouting’s Highest Rank, will be published next summer. Eagle Scouts who respond to the invitation to be in the book will be able to submit a short story and photo. These books will be published by region, and are sure to be enlightening.

The process has begun, and invitations are being sent to hundreds of thousands of Eagle Scouts across the nation. This is a legitimate NESA project. Eagle Scouts may have their story and photo published in the book without purchasing it.

New Belt Loops, Pins, Merit Badges are Coming

When the BSA was founded in 1910, boys weren’t into video games, scuba diving, or robotics. But as we enter our second century, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will be able to earn awards in these topics, thanks to a new focus on change and innovation.

New for Cub Scouts

Video Games is one of 13 new belt loops and pins in the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program. It’s been more than 10 years since the program expanded, so volunteers and Cub Scouts from around the country have been waiting for this change.

The Scout shop should begin selling a new edition of the Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program Guide (No. 34299), which will include these additions:

New for Boy Scouts

Four other new merit badges will appear over the course of the coming year:

Inventing (First quarter 2010)

Geocaching (Second quarter 2010)

Scouting Heritage (Second quarter 2010)

Robotics (Fourth quarter 2010)

These badges are being introduced because they received positive feedback in a youth interest survey. If five new merit badges seems like a lot, it is. By comparison, the BSA introduced just six new merit badges between 1992 (Collections) and 2006 (Composite Materials).

But the new badges aren’t the only innovation. In the past it took three years to create a merit badge. Now, that time has been cut to just less than a year, helping to keep the badge topics and content fresher than ever.

Announcing the 2010 “Celebrate Scouting Stamp”

The U.S. Postal Service gave us “a stamp of approval” to honor 100 years of the U.S. Scouting movement. The Celebrate Scouting stamp will be issued in the summer of 2010.

The design, created by Craig Frazier of Mill Valley, California, depicts the spirit and outdoor adventure of Scouting through a backpacking Scout and a large silhouette of a Scout surveying the landscape.

In conjunction with the announcement, we are encouraging Scouts to send letters and packages to veterans and U.S. Armed Forces personnel serving overseas.

“Regardless of our age, we never outgrow the joy of receiving a personal letter in the mail,” said Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca. “This is the least we can do for the service men and women to whom we owe the deepest gratitude for their service.”

Celebrate Scouting letterhead, guides for writing letters to deployed soldiers and veterans, and care package tips are available in an online toolkit to help Scouts get started.

The Celebrate Scouting stamp was championed by U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions of Texas and supported by a bipartisan group of more than 300 Congressional members.

Celebrating 100 Years – A Year of Celebration Patch Program

For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America’s youth. Through A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference, we will demonstrate the incredible impact of a century of living the Scout Law.

Program participants will earn recognition for making a difference in their communities due to their dedication to five of Scouting’s core values: Leadership, Character, Community Service, Achievement, and the Outdoors. Participants will be able to earn our 100th Anniversary commemorative patch and ribbon.

A Year of Celebration will take place from September 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010. The program is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Scouting alumni.  Additionally, the BSA has also teamed up with some great organizations to offer unique 100th Anniversary service projects that can apply towards your Year of Celebration Service award. These national opportunities will truly show what Scouts can do when they band together towards a shared goal.

For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for America’s youth. Through A Year of Celebration, we celebrate this legacy and commit ourselves to inspire and prepare future generations.

Scouting National Hall of Leadership

Our communities are better places to live, work, and play because of leadership – expressed in extraordinary acts of service – by Scouts, Scouters, and Scouting volunteers over generations.

We want to gather these powerful stories and share the significant positive impact Scouting leadership has on the quality of life in the communities we serve. As part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration, the Boy Scouts has created the National Hall of Leadership.

The BSA 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership is not a hall or building in the traditional sense, like the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, but its purpose is just as significant. The National Hall of Leadership is an opportunity for anyone to recognize outstanding leadership by a Scout, registered leader or Scouting volunteer who made a significant difference in the life of another by the extraordinary service they have given and the Scouting virtues they have modeled. 

To be nominated for the National Hall of Leadership, the nominee must be a living Scout or Scouting volunteer who may/may not be officially registered with the BSA.

They also must have served as an active Scout or Scouting volunteer within Scouting for at least one year.  A nominee may be young or old-there is no age limit for nominees.

Nominations are submitted online in the form of a story that is 450 words or less, describing why the person is deserving of this one-time honor.  The nomination period opens on February 8, 2009, and closes on February 8, 2010, the 100th Anniversary of Scouting.  DATE EXTENDED UNTIL APRIL 2 DUE TO THE OVERWHELMING INTEREST IN NOMINATIONS.  The final inductees to the National Hall of Leadership will total 303-one representing each BSA council and one selected by the National BSA Council-and will be announced at the BSA National Annual Meeting in Dallas in May 2010.

Camp School Attendees Wanted

The Council is looking to increase its pool of Scouters who are trained in various areas that require National Camp School certification. Specifically, we are looking for Shooting Sports Directors, Aquatics Directors,  Aquatics Supervisors, Cub and Boy Scout Program Directors, Camp Commissioners, COPE Directors, and Climbing Directors.  You must be a registered adult over the age of 21 years, be willing to attend school for 5 days (March 13-19 at Camp Strake with selected courses)  and possibly be able to work at Camp MK Brown for Summer Camp and/or Camp Don Harrington for Cub Scout Resident Camp.   If this is something you may be interested in, please contact Scott as soon as possible to discuss this great opportunity.

If your Boy Scout Troop or Venture Crew is interested in going to the Northern Tier High Adventure Base in 2011, give Scott a call at 806-358-6500 to get the information you will need to make a reservation.  Reservations begin April 1, 2010 and are first come, first serve.

Health and Safety Support Committee Confirms BSA Policy on Physical Exams

Last month, the BSA’s Health and Safety Support Committee, which is composed of volunteers in the health and safety field across the country, thoroughly reviewed the BSA’s policies requiring physical examinations to be completed and signed by a certified and licensed health-care provider-a physician (MD, DO), nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant. This included a review of material provided by various individuals and organizations representing the chiropractic community.

The committee determined the current requirements remain the best policy for the BSA, based on the fact that chiropractors are not certified to treat all of the identified high-risk factors included in the BSA’s activities (available at, under “Scouting Safely“) and are not regulated universally across the United States.

Simply stated, physicians (MD, DO), nurse practitioners, and physician’s assistants will be the only health-care providers to perform physicals for the Boy Scouts of America.

Campmaster Training Now On-Line

Are you interested in spending a weekend at Camp Don and staying in the new Campmaster Building?  If so, why not join the Campmaster Corps.  Duties including checking in units, making sure they are settled in their campsites, giving advice on how to properly use our equipment and facilities and checking them out upon departure.  This is a great opportunity to help units grow in the camping program and enjoy a weekend at camp.  The Campmaster building is ready for you to enjoy.  Central air and heat, full kitchen and bath plus two bedrooms and a living room await you!  Training is now on-line!.  Go to the link below, take the training and then call the Ranger to set up a date and time so he can show you where the utilities connections are at Camp and all the other things you need to know.  Once that is completed, we will add you to the list of Campmaster!

Merit Badge Counselor Registration

If you are a current registered Merit Badge Counselor, you must recertify every year.  It’s a simple process but must be done now.  Please click on the link below, complete and print the forms and send it to the office.  If you wish to be a Merit Badge Counselor, you must complete an Adult Registration Form and the form linked below.  There is no charge to be a Counselor.

Venturing Program Changes

The National Executive Board recently approved a resolution to change the eligibility requirements for Venturing to ensure consistency among Venturing, high-adventure bases, and other core programs.

The current age and grade eligibility requirement for participation in the Venturing program is 14 years of age and completion of the eighth grade.

Effective May 1, 2010, the minimum age requirement will be changed to 14 years of age, or 13 years of age and completion of the eighth grade. The maximum age for participation remains under 21 years of age.

“Boy Scouts of America: Today” National Photo Contest

As the Boy Scouts of America’s members, alumni, and admirers prepare to celebrate the organization’s 100th anniversary, they want to see what Scouting looks like in the communities across America.  Anyone with a passion for photography is invited to submit photo entries for a new book, to be published in October 2010.  Boy Scouts of America: Today will show Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers engaged in activities that represent the 12 points of the Scout Law.

Eligible participants may enter the contest by submitting photographs in any or all of the 12 categories to visually depict the 12 points of the Scout Law—trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.  Affiliation with the BSA or any of its programs is not necessary to submit a photo for consideration.  Winning entries will printed in the book Boy Scouts of America: Today, and winners will receive a copy of the book and a $50 gift card for official Scouting merchandise purchased through or at any participating Scout shop.

“The image should not just create a visual reaction, but must evoke a feeling about the point of the Scout Law for which it represents,” explains Roger Morgan, official BSA photographer.  “We’re looking for photographs that create an emotional response.”

The Boy Scouts of America: Today photo contest begins January 12, 2010, and entries must be received by March 31, 2010.  Photos must be representative of Scouting activities but are not limited to any specific event.  Photographs submitted for consideration must have been taken within one year of entry.  Visit for more information including how to submit photos for consideration.
