Amarillo-Area Roundtable

All scouting adult leaders need to come to Roundtable. We meet the 1st Thursday of each month at 7 pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church at 4100 S Coulter. The church is located on the west side of Coulter between 34th and 45th. Come and get to know your fellow Tiger Cub Den Leaders, Cub Scout Den Leaders, Webelos Den Leaders, Cubmasters, Assistant Cubmasters, Pack Committee members, Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Troop Committee members, etc. Come to not only learn about what’s going on in Scouting in Amarillo – but to share your ideas (and maybe win a neat door prize)!

Every Scout Deserves a Trained Adult Leader!

To complete Cub Scout Adult Basic Training, Cub Scout adult leaders (all positions) must attend a Cub Scout Leader Specific Training session. Upcoming training sessions are scheduled on Wednesday, November 11 (6:00 pm) and Saturday, December 5 (9:00 am) at the Council Service Center in Amarillo. In addition, if the adult leaders in your pack can get together for 2-2.5 hours at a time convenient for them, we will come to you! Just contact Doug Bergman.

Recharters, Recharters, Recharters!

Recharter packets are being distributed, starting at the November Roundtable (November 5, 7:00 pm, St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church). The most important piece of information in that packet is your unit’s ID number and password to get on-line. This year we’re aiming to get everything finished up by December 15! If your pack has everything turned in (including all applications and recharter papers with proper signatures, fees and Centennial Quality Award forms) by December 15, the Council will pay for your insurance ($1 for each youth and adult member in your unit). Remember, it’s a lot easier to let Stephen do your data entry, so be sure you have all your scouts and adult leaders registered before you start the on-line process.

Veterans Day Parade

Mark your calendar for November 7! Line up starts at 9:00 a.m. and the parade starts at 10:00 a.m. The parade begins at 11th and Polk Street and ends at 5th and Pierce in downtown Amarillo. Check-out information and register at Welcome to the Amarillo Texas Veterans Day Parade.

Centennial Quality Unit Awards

Remember-units do not have to wait to submit Centennial Quality Unit Award forms with their recharters! Information about the Centennial Quality Unit Award program, and a link to the form, can be found at http://www.goldenspread.org/QualityUnit/QualityUnit.htm. The application for the award can be forwarded to the Scout Office anytime after October 31st, but must be received by December 31st for consideration.

Eagle Project Reviews & Eagle Boards of Review

Adult troop leaders of Boy Scouts needing either Eagle Project Reviews or Eagle Boards of Review should contact Golden Eagle Advancement Chairman Gary Ries at 358-0552 to schedule them. Eagle Project Reviews are conducted on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm in conjunction with Roundtable at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Eagle Boards of Review are conducted on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm at the Scout Office.

District Award of Merit

Nominations for the 2010 Golden Eagle District Award of Merit will be accepted now through the January Roundtable (Thursday, January 7th). Award applications can be obtained from the Council Office or downloaded from http://www.goldenspread.org/Forms/District%20Award%20of%20Merit.pdf . Recipients will be honored at the February 2010 Roundtable (Thursday, February 4th) and the Council Reception (Sunday, February 7th).

Popcorn Pickup

The sales portion of our annual popcorn sales campaign is now complete. Popcorn delivery points will be in Dalhart, Perryton and Guymon, again this year. Popcorn will be available for pickup on Saturday, November 7th, 2009.

A detailed pickup schedule (including maps of all locations) will be sent out via Constant Contact, after Wednesday, November 4th, based on each Unit’s choice of pickup locations. Please be on time for your scheduled pickup. Your fellow volunteers, who are helping with the distribution, really appreciate your consideration.

Annual District Banquet

The annual Lone Wolf District Banquet will be held at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, November 21, 2009. We will be honoring the 2009 Lone Wolf Eagle Scout and District Award of Merit recipients. The banquet will be held in Booker, Texas. This is the annual business meeting for the District and we will be conducting the District planning conference, as part of the program. Watch for more details to follow, via Constant Contact.

School Night for Scouting – Fall Recruiting

Our District’s recruiting efforts for this year are still underway. As you continue to sign up new scouts we need to make every effort to get their applications turned in quickly. Recharter time is rapidly approaching and we want all the new boys & leaders entered into ScoutNet, before we do the production run of the recharter packets. One of the benefits to you is that you won’t have to enter the new recruits yourself, during the online recharter process.

Unit Recharters

Unit recharter time is almost upon us. All of our unit charters expire on December 31, 2009. We need to have the rechartering process completed by December 15, 2009. This allows our Council staff adequate time to correct any errors, or help you with online procedural questions. We are utilizing online rechartering again this year. This is our fifth year to do a portion of the recharter via the Internet.

What does your unit need to be doing to get ready?

Complete any applications for any new Scouts, or leaders, and submit them, along with the required registration and Boy’s Life fees, to the Council Office, now. This will save you from having to manually enter new members and leaders during online rechartering.

All applications for membership need to be complete: all birthdays, Social Security numbers and drivers license numbers filled in, all signature blocks signed (this includes unit Committee Chair and Chartered Organization Head or Representative’s approval signatures for all adults, and Authorization for Background Check) and application dates.

Recruit/designate one adult leader from your unit to complete the online recharter portion of the process.

Remember, rechartering is not complete until all paperwork and fees have been received by the Council Office!

Please note that the National Council has raised the membership fee to $15, from the current $10, effective January 1, 2010. January 1st is the date our new charters become effective, so you will need to pay the new $15 per person fee when you recharter. Recharter packets for your Unit will be distributed during the month of November.

District Award of Merit and Council Silver Beaver Award Nominations

Now is the time to be thinking about which of our fellow volunteer Scouters to honor with this year’s District Award of Merit, and the Council Silver Beaver Award. These two honors are the highest awards that our District and our Council can bestow upon on our fellow Scouters, for service to youth. Please take a moment and go here: http://www.goldenspread.org/Forms/District%20Award%20of%20Merit.pdf

2009 Lone Wolf Fall Camporee results

The 2009 Lone Wolf Fall Camporee was held on October 9-11, 2009, at Palo Duro reservoir. The weather was definitely not fall like! It was unseasonably cold; we had drizzle, rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow flurries! The flu that is going around also hurt our attendance, this year. Three troops braved the weather and attended; attendance consisted of 27 scouts and 9 adult leaders. There were also 7 district Scouters on staff. Congratulations to Troop 551, Spearman, which took the honor for top troop this year! Patrol/Troop competition results were

Skipper, who completed their Cub Scout Leader specific training, and Duwane Skipper, Ranee Skipper, Amber Scott & Steve Scott, who completed Boy Scout Leader specific training! These training sessions were held at Frank Phillips College – Allen Campus, in Perryton, Texas, on Saturday, October 17, 2009. On behalf of your boys, “thank you” for taking the time to take the training necessary for your youth to have the best scouting program possible! Thanks also go to Audrey House, for running a great Cub Leader training session!

November Calendar:

5 – Adult Leader Roundtable

11 – CS Leader Specific Training

12 – District Committee Meeting

12 – Commissioner Meeting

19 – Eagle Board of Review

Amarillo-Area Roundtable

Roundtable is this Thursday, November 5thst (1st Thursday of every month) at 7 pm and takes place at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church at 4100 S Coulter. The church is located on the west side of Coulter between 34th and 45th. Roundtable is for all adult leaders! Come and get to know your fellow Tiger Cub Den Leaders, Cub Scout Den Leaders, Webelos Den Leaders, Cubmasters, Assistant Cubmasters, Pack Committee members, Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Troop Committee members, etc. Come to not only learn about what’s going on in Scouting in Amarillo, Dumas, Cactus and Sunray – but to share your Ideas and Positive Experiences in Scouting! The Roundtable Staff have got an exciting year planned.

Every Scout Deserves a Trained Adult Leader!

To complete Cub Scout Adult Basic Training, Cub Scout adult leaders (all positions) must attend a Cub Scout Leader Specific Training session. Upcoming training sessions are scheduled on Wednesday, November 11 at 6:00 PM and Saturday, December 5 at 9:00 AM; and they will be held at the Scout Office in Amarillo. In addition, if the adult leaders in your pack can get together for 2-2.5 hours at a time convenient for them, we will come to you! Just contact Doug Bergman or Hector Baldiviezo, and let us know!!

District Committee & Commissioner Meeting

Both meetings are on Thursday, November 5th. Again, our District Committee meeting is now at 6:00 pm at the Scout Office and the Commissioner meeting is right after.

It’s that time of the year again!! Recharter Time!

The year is coming to an end, and it is time for us to recharter. Our goal for the end of the year, for all the Quanah Parker Units, is to rechart on time and earn their Quality Unit Award.

Recharter packets are being distributed, starting at the November Roundtable (November 5th, 7:00 pm, St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church). The most important piece of information in that packet is your unit’s ID number and password to get on-line. This year we’re aiming to get everything finished up by December 15th!

Eagle Boards of Review are conducted on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm at the Scout Office

Popcorn Sales

Popcorn sales are over!! Congratulations to all Quanah Parker Units – that includes leaders, parents, all Scouts (of course), and anybody involved. The district had an outstanding turn out, and has reached its goal for Popcorn Sales. Well done everybody, well done.

Celebrating 100 Years – A Year of Celebration Patch Program

For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America’s youth. Through A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference, we will demonstrate the incredible impact of a century of living the Scout Law.

Program participants will earn recognition for making a difference in their communities due to their dedication to five of Scouting’s core values: Leadership, Character, Community Service, Achievement, and the Outdoors. Participants will be able to earn our 100th Anniversary commemorative patch and ribbon.

A Year of Celebration will take place from September 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010. The program is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Scouting alumni. Additionally, the BSA has also teamed up with some great organizations to offer unique 100th Anniversary service projects that can apply towards your Year of Celebration Service award. These national opportunities will truly show what Scouts can do when they band together towards a shared goal.

For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for America’s youth. Through A Year of Celebration, we celebrate this legacy and commit ourselves to inspire and prepare future generations.

Patches can be purchased by anyone but the ribbons must be earned.

Scouting National Hall of Leadership

Our communities are better places to live, work, and play because of leadership – expressed in extraordinary acts of service – by Scouts, Scouters, and Scouting volunteers over generations.

We want to gather these powerful stories and share the significant positive impact Scouting leadership has on the quality of life in the communities we serve. As part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration, the Boy Scouts has created the National Hall of Leadership.

The BSA 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership is not a hall or building in the traditional sense, like the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, but its purpose is just as significant. The National Hall of Leadership is an opportunity for anyone to recognize outstanding leadership by a Scout, registered leader or Scouting volunteer who made a significant difference in the life of another by the extraordinary service they have given and the Scouting virtues they have modeled.

To be nominated for the National Hall of Leadership, the nominee must be a living Scout or Scouting volunteer who may/may not be officially registered with the BSA.

They also must have served as an active Scout or Scouting volunteer within Scouting for at least one year. A nominee may be young or old-there is no age limit for nominees.

Nominations are submitted online in the form of a story that is 450 words or less, describing why the person is deserving of this one-time honor. The nomination period opens on February 8, 2009, and closes on February 8, 2010, the 100th Anniversary of Scouting. The final inductees to the National Hall of Leadership will total 303-one representing each BSA council and one selected by the National BSA Council-and will be announced at the BSA National Annual Meeting in Dallas in May 2010.

We are looking for a few good BSA Alumni! With the 100th Anniversary coming up in 2010, we are looking for past BSA members (adults and youth) Alumni to help provide memories for upcoming celebrations and history. If you know of a Scouter who is no longer active or was a Scout as a youth, let them know that they can go to the link below and reconnect with Scouting.
